Obituary for Margaret "Peg" Colgan Bankie

Peoria- Margaret “Peg” Colgan Bankie, age 96, of Peoria, passed away at 1:16 AM on Thursday, February 2, 2023 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center due to her rapid decline because of Pancreatic Cancer.


Born August 16, 1926 in Peoria at St. Francis Hospital, Peg was raised on the Fred and Irene Colgan family farm, one mile south of Bradford,IL. She graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Nauvoo, IL. After graduation, she taught at a one room schoolhouse near Bradford for several years. Later she worked at the Aldrich Co. in Wyoming, IL, where she met Henry C. Bankie Jr., whom she would marry on July 19, 1947.


After her children were grown, Peg volunteered at the Peoria Courthouse with Witness Information Services for 12 years. She lived for many years at Independence Village, after moving from the family home on N. Knoxville Ave. in Peoria. The family lived there for over 40 years. She was a long-time member of St. Philomena Parish. Peg will be remembered as a devoted and loving mother and wife, who always enjoyed time spent with her extended family and friends.


Survivors include four children: Charles Brett (Eda) Bankie of California, Margo (John) Flad of Florida, Dr. Susan (Brett) Alexander of South Bend, IN., and Christopher “C.J.” Bankie of Peoria; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and one sister Judy Hopkins of Henry, IL.


Peg was preceded in death by her parents, husband Henry in 2014, two brothers: Tom and Reggie Colgan and one sister Pat France.


Visitation will be held at Resurrection Mausoleum, 7519 N. Allen Rd, on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 from 1:00 PM until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 PM. Father Stephen Willard will officiate, and entombment will follow in Resurrection Mausoleum where Peg will be laid to rest beside her husband.


In lieu of flowers, memorials in Peg’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, TAPS or the donor’s local animal humane society.
