Obituary for M. Michael "Mike" Waters
Dunlap - M. Michael (Mike) Waters, 65, of Dunlap passed away peacefully at 8:06 AM on February 28, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born November 6, 1951 to Maurice A. and Marjorie A. Heinze Waters in Peoria. He married Linda Ziegler, August 13, 1977 in Henry. She survives.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Gary.
He is survived by four daughters, Kathleen (Brian) DuBois of Washington, Illinois; Kristine (Peter) Ray of Denver, Colorado; Karlene (Justin) Enderle of Albuquerque, NM; and Kerrianne Waters of Dunlap, Illinois; four grandchildren, Evan, Lillian, and Madelyn DuBois of Washington, Illinois and Michael Ray of Denver, Colorado; two sisters, Mary Lou (James) Wolfe of Peoria, Illinois and Peggy (Bud) Nichols of Peoria, Illinois; four nieces, Laura (Matt) Dalmut of Farmington, Arkansas; Krista (Alan) Levin of Loveland, Ohio; Renee (Adam) Lipton of Mitford, Ohio; Courtney Ziegler of Sparland, Illinois; two nephews, Patrick Shaw of Plainfield, Illinois; Zachary Ziegler of Sparland, Illinois.
He attended Bergan High School and Illinois State University. He then worked for National Credit Union Association while attending John Marshall Law School in Chicago. He received his JD in 1979 and began his law career with Lester, Berry, Smith Law Firm in Peoria in March 1979. Later the firm became Smith, Waters, Kuehn, Burnett, and Hughes.
In 1998 he joined the firm of Vonachen, Lawless, Trager, and Slevin as a partner. In June 2016 he joined Westervelt, Johnson, Nicoll and Keller, LLC. His love of the law practice was evident throughout his life.
His love of the law was only surpassed by the love he had for his family. He coached his daughters’ tee ball and softball teams for many years. He faithfully attended his daughters’ sporting events and extracurricular activities. Later he attended his grandson’s soccer games. He was a huge ISU sports fan. He also cheered for the Cubs and shared that enthusiasm with the entire family.
He was one of the first CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) volunteers in Peoria County when the first group was trained in 2005. He enjoyed duplicate bridge for years and played competitively with local bridge partners in some national tournaments. He was a member of the Peoria Duplicate Bridge Club. He enjoyed teaching others the game that he loved. He was a Bronze Life Master of ACBL.
He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church.
Visitation will be held on Friday, March 03, 2017 from 9:30 AM until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM at St. Jude Catholic Church. Father Patrick Henehan will officiate and burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery.
