Obituary for Linda E. Russell

PEORIA HEIGHTS – Linda E. Russell, 97, of Peoria Heights, passed away at 7:05 a.m., Saturday, August 24, 2013, at Apostolic Christian Skyline Nursing Home. Linda was born on June 20, 1916, in Coventry, England, to George and Ellen (Cotton) Liggins. She married Albert “Tig” Russell on October 10, 1936, in Coventry, England. He preceded her in death on December 17, 1991. She was also preceded in death by three brothers; two sisters; and her only child, Anthony “Tony” Russell, on March 23, 1998. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Sharon Russell Burns of Peoria; and three grandchildren, William “Charlie” (Mary Kay) Russell and Michael (Kim) Russell both of Peoria, and Kim (Jerry) Rashid of Chillicothe. She was also blessed with eleven great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Kaitlin, and Collin Backes, Clint Russell, Megan, Kasey, and Brandon Russell, and Meredith, Ben, Jake, and Allie Rashid. After surviving the bombings of WWII in England, Linda came to this country in 1948. She attended Browns Business School and retired from the Northern Regional research Laboratory, after 20 years. Linda enjoyed knitting, and is well known for her sweaters and Christmas stockings. At the age of 89, she knitted 83 Christmas stockings for the LaSalle Veterans’ Home; and at the age of 91, she published a book about her life and surviving the bombings and war in England. She also enjoyed the Cubs, traveling back to England and writing poetry. She was a longtime member of Amvets Post 64 and the Navy Marine Club in Peoria Heights. The family would like to thank Linda’s in-home caregivers and OSF Hospice for their compassionate care, kindness, and support and the staff at AC Skyline for their loving care. A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m., Monday, August 26, 2013, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. Father Shawn Doubet will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the mortuary. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens. Memorials may be made to OSF Hospice or Apostolic Christian Skyline Nursing Home. Tributes and condolences may be submitted to
