Obituary for Lillian F. Sherd

Dunlap – Lillian F. Sherd of Dunlap, passed away on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at 4:17 AM at OSF Richard Owens Hospice Home.

Born August 1, 1926, in Virginia Beach, VA to William Fred and Hattie Lee (Woodruff) Henley. Lillian met her future husband, Hervey E. Sherd USN at an USO dance. They were married July 4, 1946, in Virginia Beach.

He passed away April 8, 1991. Her grandson Gregory Sherd also preceded her in death.

Lillian is survived by her daughter Linda (Roger) Hunter of Dunlap; son, Hervey E. (Janet) Sherd, JR of Richmond, VA; three grandchildren, Jennifer (Jason) Davis, Roger Hunter, JR, Hervey and his significant other (Daja Felton) Sherd III; four great grandchildren, Elizabeth Gangloff, Misty Mooberry, Aimee Mooberry, and Skyler Sherd; four great great children and several nieces.

After high school, Lillian worked for the Bell Telephone Company as a switchboard operator. When working nights, she would plug into different Coast Guard stations along the coast and talk to the young sailors on duty. After marriage, she worked as a part-time operator.

During their married life, Lillian and Hervey lived in several states due to him being a career Naval NCO. These include, Virginia Beach, Pensacola, Bermuda, Millington, Annapolis, San Diego and lastly Kodiak Island, surviving the earthquake and tsunami of 1964.

She loved watch the deer, squirrels and birds come into her backyard to eat the treats she provided, carrots, sugar beets, corn, etc.

A Funeral Mass will be on Wednesday, September 29 2021 at 10:30 am at St Jude Catholic Church. Frs. Patrick Henehan and Daniel McShane will officiate.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the mass on Wednesday.

Further Services will be on Saturday, October 2 2021 at 11 am at O’Brien – Gerst Funeral Home in Grand Rapids, MI.

Visitation there will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Deacon Roger Hunter will conduct that service.

Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Grand Rapids.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Catholic Church, OSF Richard Owen Hospice Home in Peoria, or TLC Rosters Animal Shelter in Mackinaw.

The family would like everyone to follow COVID protocol by wearing masks.
