Obituary for Lewis Grant

Peoria-G. Lewis “Lou” Grant, 88, formerly of Peoria, died at 12:40 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at Apostolic Christian Home of Eureka. Born on Sep. 13, 1918, in Peoria, to Lewis and Mayme Hines Grant, he married Elizabeth “Betty” Purcell on April 15, 1944, in Peoria. She died Oct. 21, 2005 in Peoria. Lou was also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ellen Bishop. Surviving are three daughters, Peggy Grant of Chicago, Pat (Joseph) Hanley and Mary Elizabeth Grant both of Peoria; four sons, Bill (Candy) Grant of Peoria, Lewis (Tricia) Grant of Chillicothe, Robert (Doe) Grant of Peoria, and James (Andrea) Grant of East Peoria. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Lou was a blending operator 44 years at Hiram Walker and Sons Distillery, retiring in 1981. He was also a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church and it’s Men’s Club. He was Past President of the Peoria Officials Association. He was a charter member of the Peoria Officials Hall of Fame, was a former Secretary Treasurer of Local Distiller’s 55, lifetime member of the Independent Sports Club, member of the St. Jude Knights of Columbus, and former board member of P.A.R.C. Lou was a Democratic Precinct Committeeman and member of the Old Timers Baseball Association. In 1936-37 Lou was All-City in football, baseball, and basketball at Manual High School. A funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at St. Mark’s Church, with Rev. Terry Cassidy officiating. Visitation will be Friday, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Wright & Salmon Mortuary with a rosary at 3 p.m. Further visitation will be 30 minutes before mass on Saturday. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in West Peoria. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Mark’s Church, Apostolic Christian Home of Eureka, or P.A.R.C.
