Obituary for Leonard E. Nevitt

DUNLAP ~ Leonard E. “Len” Nevitt, 91, of Dunlap, passed away at 4:47 a.m. Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria, surrounded by his family.


He was born May 26, 1931 in rural Putnam County to William and Mary (McCauley) Nevitt. He married Margaret M. “Marge” Flukey on October 8, 1960 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Depue, IL. She survives.


Also surviving are his two children, Michelle (Andre) Liggis of Peoria and Lisa (Scott) Roher of Dunlap; two grandchildren, Nicole (Ian) VanAntwerp of Springfield and Bryan (Katelyn) Liggis of East Moline. He is also survived by his twin brother, Lloyd (Frances) Nevitt of Lacon.


He was preceded in death by his parents, eight brothers and three sisters.


Len and his twin brother enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1949 and were featured in the Peoria Journal Star under the caption “WHICH TWIN HAS THE TONI?”. He witnessed four Atomic tests at Enewetak in 1951 and served in the war zone during the Korean War in 1952. He was discharged in 1953.


He was employed by Gauger & Diehl, Certified Public Accounting Firm in Peoria from 1957-1965. In 1965, he joined OSF HealthCare and served as the Chief Financial Officer from 1970-2000. He served on the OSF Board of Directors from 1989 to 2010 and on the OSF Foundation Board from 1989 to 2019.


His funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at St. Jude Catholic Church in Peoria. Father Patrick Henehan will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at the church. Additional visitation will be half an hour prior to the Mass on Wednesday. Entombment will follow at the Resurrection Mausoleum in Peoria.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to St. Jude Catholic Church or OSF Children’s Hospital of Illinois Foundation.
