Obituary for Leo C. "Dick" Cushing
Leo C. “Dick” Cushing, age 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 1, 2023 surrounded by family at the Veterans Home in Manteno, Il.
Dick was born on April 9, 1932 in Peoria, IL the son of Leo E. Cushing and Margaret Seaton Cushing.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters Marilyn (John) Tribbey, Roseann (John) Poremba, one brother David (Dixie) Cushing and one grandson Christopher Cushing.
Dick is survived by one brother Gerald (Arlos) Cushing, his children Edward (Dianne) Cushing, Steven (Becky) Cushing, Colleen Cushing Ragon, Kevin (Dawn) Cushing, Kathleen (Thomas) Trotta, Mary Cushing Merfeld, Daniel (Ellen) Cushing. Dick is also survived by grandchildren Mathew (Amanda) Cushing, Timothy (Mary) Cushing, Kelly (Patrick) Damm, Erin (Taylor) Kirschner, Ryan Cushing, Meghan Cushing, Kathleen Ragon, Austin Cushing, Logan Cushing, Ryan (Samantha) Trotta, Mary Kathleen Trotta, Patrick Merfeld, Benjamin Cushing, and Kevin Cushing. He is also survived by 10 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dick was a graduate of Spalding Institute and attended Bradley University. He proudly served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He also served as a Chicago police officer. He worked at Vachon Brake Service and then for his sons at Bobcat of Peoria. He enjoyed volunteering for many years assisting the football program at Spalding.
The family wishes to thank the medical staff at the Veterans Home in Manteno IL and the Apostolic Christian Home in Eureka, IL for their compassionate care.
Visitation will be held at Wright and Salmon Mortuary on Friday, January 6, 2023 from 4-7 pm. The Recitation of Rosary will be at 6:30 pm. A mass of Christian burial will be accorded at St. Mark Catholic Church on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 10 am, Msgr. Brian Brownsey will be officiating. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Kickapoo, IL.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the West Peoria Fire Department or St. Mark’s Parish.
