Obituary for Lawrence E. Schwenger, Sr.

PEORIA-Lawrence E. Schwenger, Sr., 91, of Peoria, passed away at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, January 9, 2009 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center. He was born on April 17, 1917 in Limestone Township to John and Katie Heberle Schwenger. He married Frances A. Kelly on June 5, 1943 in Portsmouth, Virginia. She survives. He is also survived by three children, Lawrence E. Jr. (and Kathleen) Schwenger of Peoria, Victoria (and Roger) Doman of Naperville and Mary Jean Auer of Peoria; six grandchildren, Matthew (and Lisa) Doman of Glen Ellyn, Michael Doman of Aurora, Kevin (and Stephanie) Schwenger of Phoenix, Arizona, Katie Schwenger of Peoria, Joshua (and Holly) Auer of Peoria and Erin (and Jeff) D’Achino of Portland, Oregon; three great-grandchildren, Ethan and Jacob Doman of Glen Ellyn and Andrew Schwenger of Phoenix, Arizona; and one sister, Verna Eichorn of Peoria. He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and one brother. He was employed by the Steamfitters Local 353 for 35 years, retiring in 1982. During that time, he served as President of Local 353 from January 1, 1970 - December 31, 1978. He also taught classes for the apprentice steamfitters for several years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus #427 Third Degree Spalding Council, the Alhambra, Independent Sportsman Club, Friends of Fathersless and Boys and Girls and Hanna City Sportsman Club. He was also a member of St. Philomena Parish and its Men’s Club. He served in the US Navy Medical Corps in 1943, during World War II, and at the Naval Hospital in Oran, North Africa, and later as a medic on a Mine Sweeper in the Pacific Theatre until the war’s end. He was an avid fisherman and golfer having belonged to Willow Knolls Men’s League, Peoria Seniors’ Golf League and Madison’s 50 Over 50 Golf League. Larry loved all kinds of sports and was a devoted CUB fan. He delivered meals on wheels until he was 85 years old. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 13th at St. Philomena Catholic Church with the Reverend Donald Henderson as the celebrant. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. on Monday at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. Additional visitation will be one hour before the mass at the church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
