Obituary for Lavena M. Mayo

PEORIA-Lavena M. Mayo, 100, of Peoria, passed away at 5:55 a.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2009 at OSF Saint Clare Home in Peoria Heights. She was born on May 1, 1908 in Donnelson, IL to Richard and Margaret Rhuby Eccles. She married Robert (Vigliocco) Mayo, her husband of 50 years, on February 25, 1933 in Hillsboro, IL. He passed away on February 15, 1983 in Peoria. She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Rosanne Hughes, two sisters and four brothers. She is survived by her son, Robert (Margaret) Mayo of Farmington, IL; daughter, Linda (Timothy) Elder of Dunlap, IL; grandchildren, Michael Mayo, Kelly Howell, Ken Mayo, Kristy Schofield, Kimberly Best-DeWinter, Erin Elder-Lawrence and Sean Elder; and seventeen great-grandchildren. She was a member of Bradley Epworth United Methodist, United Methodist Women, and earlier in life was a Girl Scout leader at Franklin School. Lavena was a talented seamstress and a loving mother and grandmother. She loved to travel with her family and friends, visiting such faraway locations as Alaska and China while well into her 90s. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 8, 2009 at Bradley Epworth United Methodist Church with Rev. Jerry Colgan and Rev. Tom Eckhart officiating. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. Additional visitation will be one hour before the services at the church. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Bradley Epworth United Methodist Church, 1316 W. Columbia Terrace, Peoria, IL 61606, American Cancer Society or YWCA of Peoria, 1013 W. Lake, Peoria, IL 61614.
