Obituary for Kevin J Martin

Kevin Joseph Martin, 37 of Peoria passed away peacefully at home with family and friends on Friday May 27, 2016. He was born February 21, 1979 in Peoria, Illinois to John L. and JoAnn (Rafaj) Martin

Surviving are his parents and sister Elizabeth (Beth) Martin, her husband Ross Hambourger and their two children Casey and Claire of Nederland, CO along with 7 aunts and uncles and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Joseph & Anna Rafaj and Glen & Margaret (Betty) Martin.

A graduate of Dunlap High School, he received his Bachelors Degree in Political Science 2003 and was working on his Masters Degree in Social Work at St Louis University at the time of his death.

Kevin was very friendly and always cheerful and upbeat. He enjoyed meeting people, made friends quickly, and was always there to cheer you up when you needed a friend. He enjoyed sports, particularly the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Blackhawks and was known to have stayed up till 3am watching a women's lacrosse meet.

Kevin had a variety of jobs after graduation combining his interest in politics and helping people. He assisted in a variety of local and state campaigns in the Peoria area and Illinois. He last worked at OSF St Francis and used his special "people" talents to make patients feel at ease while admitting them to the hospital. Having a rare form of cancer, he took part in a clinical study at Barnes Jewish Hospital in order to help others.

Visitation will be in Hettinger Hall at St. Jude Catholic Church, 10811 N Knoxville Ave, Peoria on Tuesday, May 31st from 4 to 7 PM. An additional visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the church. A Memorial Mass will be held at the church on Wednesday at 11 AM officiated by Fr. Patrick Henehen followed by a luncheon in the church hall. Cremation rites have been accorded.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations in Kevin's name can be made to the Ewing's Sarcoma Research Fund along with a note specifying this intent and sent to Washington University, Division of Oncology, Attn: Robert Barczewski , Box 8007, 660 South Euclid Ave, St. Louis, MO 63110.
