Obituary for Kenneth Leo McGarvey

Peoria- Kenneth Leo McGarvey, age 75, of Peoria, passed away at 3:28 PM on Friday, September 14, 2018 at his residence with his family by his side.

Born October 25, 1942 in Peoria he was a son to Kenneth Owen and Mary Regina (Shane) McGarvey. On February 10, 1966 he married the love of his life Elizabeth “Betty” Maher in Huntington, England. She survives. Ken joined the USAF in March of 1962. Stationed at Keesler AFB, Alconbury England, Warner Robbins AFB, Island of Malta, Tinker AFB, and Amchitka Alaska on the Aleutian Chain. Discharged in 1970 then returned to Alaska and worked in communications for Atomic Energy Commission. In 1972 Ken was employed by Illinois Bell until retirement in 2003.

Ken loved being outside gardening and bike riding. He had a great love of Hostas. Ken rode his bike thousands of miles throughout the US. His greatest accomplishment was riding coast to coast from Astoria, Oregon to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Ken enjoyed retirement with family and friends and loved his 5 grandchildren.

Ken was a very faithful Catholic, reading and learning the Bible. He took part in many biblical classes. Ken always volunteered for his current parish. While living in Sherman, he was an active parent in “The Helpers of Christ” doing home repairs in the Springfield area throughout the year and in the Mississippi Delta in the summers. At St. Jude he was a volunteer for the garden ministry.

Ken was a very loving, patient, and kind man and will be missed by all who knew him. He loved sharing his time, talents, and knowledge; he was a “jack of all trades.”

Survivors include his wife Betty of Peoria; three children: Molly (Corey) McGarvey of Austin, TX, Shawn (Laura) McGarvey of Iowa City, IA and Maggie (Jim) Cour of Brimfield; five grandchildren: Alexa (Nathan) Eberly, James Law, Jack and Lucy McGarvey and Benjamin Cour; two great-grandchildren: Holden and Waylon Eberly; two brothers: Stephen McGarvey of Kewanee, IL and David McGarvey of Wyoming, IL; as well as, one sister Joyce (Larry) Dresch of Lafayette, IN.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents, one sister Mary Ann McGarvey and one nephew James McGarvey.
