Obituary for Kenneth A. Hanley

KICKAPOO – Kenneth A. Hanley, 79, of Kickapoo passed away at 3:35 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2014, at Kindred Hospital in Peoria. Kenneth was born on Oct. 20, 1935, in Peoria to Edward A. and Caroline (Schleifling) Hanley. He married Norma L. Powers on Aug. 17, 1957, in Brimfield. She survives. He is also survived by his sons, Mike (Sally) Hanley and their children, Joshua and Matthew Hanley; Pat (Sheryl) Hanley and their children, TJ and Jill Peterson; his siblings, John Hanley, Edward (Jill) Hanley, Phyllis (David) Heinz, Annie (Harold) Snider, Susan (David) Dwyer, and Carol (Merlin) Mathewson; and his sister-in-law, Mandy Hanley. He was preceded in death by his brother, David Hanley; and sister-in-law, Caryl Hanley. Kenneth was a Spalding graduate, where he played varsity football. He was the owner and operator of Hanley’s Standard, one of the last “full service” stations, for over 40 years, retiring in 1996. Kenneth was a member of the Kickapoo Sportsman Club, the Peoria County Beef Assoc., the Peoria County Farm Bureau, St. Mary of Kickapoo Parish, and Peoria County Soil and Water, where he organized fish sales. He was a longtime organizer for the Journal Star Brothers Bowling Tournament. His first love was Norma. His second love was for hunting, fishing, hogging, and winemaking. His third love of cows and haymaking he got from his mentor, Paul Heinz, and fourth were the Hackensack vacations with his grandchildren and Cardinals baseball The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Kindred Hospital, especially Greg and Justin. A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 2014, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Kickapoo. Father Joseph Dondanville will officiate. Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, 2014, at the Parish Hall with recitation of the Rosary at 5 p.m. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements. Memorials may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church or St. Mary’s Catholic Grade School, both of Kickapoo.
