Kathryn “Katie” Marie Giacabazi, 101, of Farmington, formerly of Peoria, went peacefully to her heavenly home on Friday, October 15, 2021, at home surrounded by her loving family.
Katie was born in Peoria on December 21, 1919, the daughter of Carol and Mary (Downey) Hebel. She married the love of her life, Charles E Giacabazi, at St. John’s Catholic Church on August 1, 1953. He preceded her in death on December 10, 2007.
Katie is survived by her children Mary (Tim) Driscoll of Peoria, Mike (Dawn) Giacabazi of Canton, Angela (Jorge) Freyre of Farmington, Daughter-in-law Nora O’Neill of Peoria. Along with grandchildren, Monica Robotham, Fr. Vincent Giacabazi S.J., Joseph Driscoll, Nicholas Price, Anthony, Katherine, Andrew Giacabazi and 3 Great Grandchildren Sebastien & Owen Robotham, and Lilly Whittaker.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband Charles, beloved daughter Judy, brother Gerald, parents, grandparents, uncles, and a great grandson Luke.
Katie attended Tyng grade school, Manual Training High School graduating in 1937, St. Francis School of nursing, graduating in 1940. In 1943 she joined the United States Nursing Corp and served as Second Lieutenant in World War II at the European Theater at the 108 General Hospital in London England. Katie was very proud of her military service and was honored to serve her country. She was proud to participate in the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight to Washington, DC.
After returning from the service, she began her career working as a nurse for Dr. Morris Adland, and later worked at OSF St Francis Hospital, and Wyman Eye Associates for Dr. George, Dr. Tom Wyman and Dr Steven Sicher.
Katie was active in The Catholic War Veterans, Amvets, VFW, American Legion, St Jude’s Mother’s March, Farmington Nurses Club, Farmington Moose Women’s Auxiliary, The Daughters of Isabella. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and St. Matthew’s Catholic Church.
As a nurse, caregiver, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and a friend, she was faithful, strong, capable, and tireless, always striving to make everything better. Her goodness, love, and compassion has touched so many, and her wisdom lives on like a legacy of love that will always be remembered.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Serenity Point Hospice for Mom’s care.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 30,2021, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Peoria from 9:00 to 11:00am followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Vincent Giacabazi S.J. and Fr. Jeremy Freehill officiating. Burial will follow in St Mary’s Cemetery in West Peoria with Military Honors. All are invited to join the family for a lunch reception in the parish hall. Please follow COVID restrictions.
