Obituary for Kathleen "Kacky" Rose (Sheehan) Heinzen

Peoria – Kathleen “Kacky” Rose (Sheehan) Heinzen, age 87, of Peoria, passed away at 3:45 PM Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at home surrounded by family.

She was born on June 2, 1930, in Peoria, IL, to William Joseph and Hallie (Payne) Sheehan. She married Dr. Frederick “Fritz” Heinzen at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Peoria, on June 18, 1955. He preceded her in death May 6, 2014.

Surviving are eight children, Frederick, Jr. (Janet), Fairfax, VA, and 3 grandchildren, Katie, Frederick III, & Hallie Heinzen; Bridget (Tim) Margeson, Cumming, GA; Naomi (Tom) Lasky, Whitefish Bay, WI, and 5 grandchildren, Luke, Emily, Mark, Erik, and Kellen Lasky; Heidi (Dan) Sullivan, Naperville, IL, and 4 grandchildren, Nick, J.P., Keri, and Danny Sullivan; Katie (Rick) Fulcher, Peoria, IL, and 3 grandchildren, Erin, Maura, and Drew Fulcher; Kevin (Julie) Heinzen, Minneapolis, MN; Erik Heinzen, Denver, CO; Carrie (Scott) Kubicek, Elkhorn, NE, and 3 grandchildren, Ben, Maureen, and Kevin Kubicek.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister, Naomi Sheehan.

Kacky graduated from St. Mark’s Grade School in 1944; The Academy of our Lady in 1948; Bradley University, with a BA degree, majoring in Sociology, in 1952. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority, where she served as President. She was elected to the Board of the Bradley Student Senate for several years.

Following graduation, Kacky was a District Director for Peoria’s Kickapoo Council of Girl Scouts and Director for Camp Whippoorwill. She was appointed to the Central Volunteer Bureau, a department of the Peoria Community Chest and Council to recruit and place volunteers for the “Red Feather” agencies, which then became The United Fund (United Way). She became the Public Relations Director for the United Way.

Following her marriage to Dr. Fritz Heinzen, they moved to South Dakota while he was in the US Air Force. They returned to Peoria to live and raise their family. Kacky was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and its Women’s Guild, where she served on the board as President for one year. The Heinzen’s were one of the original families at St. Vincent de Paul Parish. She was a volunteer at the school in various positions for many years.

Kacky was an active member of the Peoria Medical Society Alliance, where she served one year as a Board Member and Secretary for the Alliance. She gave generously of her time in various capacities, including being a puppeteer, traveling to local grade schools to share information on healthcare.

In addition, she was a 50 year member of the Catholic Women’s League. She and her husband were Co-President’s of the Spalding/Academy Parent’s Board. She was a Gamma Phi Beta Sorority Alumni.

Kacky was a volunteer at Heartland Community Health Clinic for 7 years.
Kacky and her husband, Fritz, were recipients of the Pere Marquette Award, from the Catholic Diocese of Peoria in 2000.

Kacky will be fondly remembered for her Irish wit and sense of humor. She was most of all a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed family gatherings with Fritz, their eight children and 18 grandchildren, traveling, and preparing hearty home style meals and sweets for family and friends.

To the AC Skyline Caregivers and the nurses from Nurses Caring for People, thank you for your gentle hands in caring for our mother. Her passing was one of love and peace. Here’s to the unsung angels such as you all!

A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 AM, Saturday, September 16, 2017 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 6001 N. University, in Peoria, with Fr. James Pallardy officiating. Visitation will be at Wright & Salmon Mortuary on September 15, 2017 from 5:00 PM – 7:30 PM, with Recitation of the Rosary at 7:30 PM. Additional visitation is one hour before the Mass at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church. Entombment will follow in Resurrection Mausoleum.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul School Endowment Fund, Peoria Notre Dame High School, OSF Hospice, or the Retirement Fund of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Immaculate Conception.
