Katherine Sue Scherer Conner, beloved daughter, sister, wife, and aunt died Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at the age of 95.
Sue was born October 4, 1927 in Eagle, WI, to Howard P. and Gertrude Nelson Scherer.
She was a 1946 graduate of Peoria High School and graduated with honors from Ward Belmont College in Nashville, TN in 1948 where she was inducted into PHI Theta Kappa Fraternity. Furthering her education, she received a BA in Foreign Languages from Sophie Newcomb College of Tulane University in New Orleans in 1950. There she was elected to the foreign language honor society of Phi Sigma lota and Phi Mu Fraternity.
Upon graduation Sue moved back to Peoria and where she began her lifelong career with Hyster Corporation. Applying both her language studies and her gracious people skills, she became an executive secretary in the International Sales Division. In 1985 she married Hollis I. Connor and moved to Chicago, returning to Peoria shortly after his death in 2011.
Sue was a world traveler and enjoyed sharing her experiences with her nine nieces and nephews. All hold dear precious times they shared with her, her kind and gentle nature, and her matchless sense of style.
Sue leaves behind six nieces: Susan (Phil) Calandra, Barbara Turner, Katy (Terry) Fox, Jody (Marc) Maske, Jill (Henry) Vicary, Jolynn (Trey) Robbins; three nephews: Donald Haller, Patrick Scherer, and James (Eryn) Scherer; 18 grand nieces and nephews and her husband’s four children: Clare Garling, Alice Conner, Kate Conner and James Conner.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers: John O. (Patty) Scherer and James P. (Penny) Scherer, one sister Mary J. (Donald) Haller and nephew James P. Haller.
Her years of loving care by the staff of Liberty Village of Peoria and nieces Katy Fox, Jody Maske and Barb Turner are gratefully acknowledged.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Thomas Catholic Church at 10:00 AM on October 2, 2023. Msgr. Jason Gray will officiate and graveside services will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in West Peoria.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Thomas Catholic Church.
