Obituary for Julia Harkness

PEORIA - Julia “Dede” Harkness, 63, of Peoria passed away at 10:46 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, at her residence, after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. Born June 15, 1951, in Peoria, Dede was a daughter to the late William and Mary Golike-Molloy. She attended Bergan High School, graduating with the class of 1969. On February 14, 1970, Dede married David Harkness at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Peoria. She was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, the National Business Women’s Association, and a supporter of the Contemporary Art Center. Known for her selfless attitude, Dede never knew a stranger and always put others ahead of herself, taking the lead hosting many gatherings over the years to bring people together. Possessing a positive attitude and strong determination, Dede became a respected business woman. She was a director for Mary Kay in Peoria for many years, and later owned and operated Dede’s Cosmetics Plus in Lafayette, Ind., for 14 years. Dede and her husband lived and worked in England for five years, and she enjoyed her extensive European travels. When she returned from England, she began designing and making Artisan Jewelry, and established another business, Wearable Art by Dede. She was dearly loved and will always be remembered for her love of the beach, and being with her family and friends. She will be greatly missed. Survivors include her husband, David Harkness; one son, Dirk Harkness of Bloomington, Ill.; and one brother, Tom (Lynn) Molloy of Las Vegas, Nev.; as well as several cherished nieces and nephews. Dede was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Frank Molloy. Visitation will be held on Wednesday October 22, 2014 between the hours of 5 to 7 p.m. at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. Visitation will also be held at 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral service Thursday, October 23, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Northminster Presbyterian Church. Pastor Mike Shirey will officiate and cremation rights will be accorded. Memorials in Dede’s memory may be made to Triple Negative Breast Cancer “TNBC” Foundation, OSF Hospice, or Northminster Presbyterian Church.
