Obituary for Judy Giacabazi

Judy Giacabazi age 62 of Bloomington, MN passed away peacefully at St. Mary’s Hospital (Mayo) in Rochester, MN surrounded by loved ones on August 24, 2020 after a lengthy battle with liver disease.
Judy was born on April 19, 1958 in Peoria, Illinois to Charles and Kathryn (Hebel) Giacabazi. She survived by her mother, Kathryn Giacabazi, sisters Mary (Tim) Driscoll, Angela (Jorge) Freyre and brother Michael (Dawn), sister-in-law Nora O’Neill, nieces and nephews Monica Robothom, Rev. Vincent Giacabazi, SJ, Joseph Driscoll, Nicholas Price and Anthony, Katie and Andrew Giacabazi and great nephews Sebastian and Owen Robothom, dear friend Sandy Joiner, aunt and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father Charles Giacabazi, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and beloved dogs Sasha and Tessa.
Judy grew up in central Illinois and graduated from Spoon River Valley High School and obtained her Associate’s Degree from Spoon River College. She then moved to Minnesota where she attended the College of St. Theresa, Winona, MN, and earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She began her nursing career at St. Mary’s Hospital (part of Mayo Clinic) in Rochester, MN as a registered nurse and later worked there as a nurse manager on a cardiac unit. She retired from Mayo and moved to Minneapolis, MN to practice nursing in the telemedicine field. Her most recent job was as a nurse manager for Presbyterian Homes in Bloomington, MN. Judy loved being a nurse. She combined nursing with her leadership and teaching skills to help train new nurses and to manage/direct nursing staff.
Judy was one of the most giving, caring, compassionate and nonjudgmental individuals you could meet. She was a good listener. She opened her heart to so many and was always there to listen and give guidance when needed. She loved spending time with family and friends, and she knew how to make that time special by cooking, baking and decorating in unique ways. Her nieces and nephews were very special to her. Every party had a theme. Her homemade chocolate chip cookies were delicious, and she was famous for her hand-decorated sugar cookies – for all the various holidays.
Judy was an avid gardener who took much pride in making her yard and gardens beautiful with shrubs, plants, flowers and other decorations. She loved to order and browse through seed catalogues and was always starting new plants from seed. She was an avid animal lover who adored her two dogs. She loved crafts of all kinds and never hesitated to tackle a new project or try out a new skill. She liked to sew and often made handcrafted gifts at holiday time. Judy loved to travel and was happy to have visited Italy, Greece, Alaska and Germany.
One of Judy’s favorite volunteer roles was as the leader of the Lunch Pit crew on many Red Ribbon Rides and Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walks. In this role she used her leadership, hospitality, decorating and people skills while helping to raise money for HIV/AIDS and breast cancer resources – two causes she dearly believed in supporting.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2020 from 9 a.m. until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 1010 South Louisa St., Peoria, IL. Father Vincent Giacabazi, SJ and Father Jeremy Freehill will officiate. Burial will be at St Mary’s Cemetery in West Peoria. Social distancing and masks required.
A celebration of life is planned for October in Bloomington MN, to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Clare Housing, to your favorite animal rescue shelter or to the family to help with medical expenses.
