Obituary for Joseph S. Unes

PEORIA-Joseph S. Unes, 85, of Peoria, passed away at 5:17 a.m. on Thursday, November 27, 2008 at Proctor Hospital ER. He was born on December 11, 1922 in St. Louis, MO to Sarkis K. and Wadea Antoun Unes. He married Rose Malouf on May 29, 1952 in Peoria. He later married Betty Peters for a short time. He is also survived by three daughters, Denise Hufeld of Peoria, Diane (Charles) Lamb of Hanna City, IL and Donna Abraham of Pekin; one son, Daniel (Theresa) Unes of Carpentersville, IL; seven grandchildren, Donald Kersh, Jason Lamb, Patricia Hufeld, Kara Lamb, Amelia (Tim) Altom, Rita Kersh and Jessica Unes; three great-grandchildren, Nadia Altom, Amelia Altom and Preston Altom; one sister, Evelyn Unes of Peoria and one brother, Michael Unes of Germantown Hills, IL. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Farida, Evaline and Matilda; and three brothers, Fred, Louis and Yousef. Joseph worked for the Peoria County Sheriff’s Department for 23 ½ years and retired in August 1981. He also helped his brothers in their businesses throughout his life. He was a World War II US Army Air Force veteran. He was a member of St. Sharbel Catholic Church Maronite Rite, American, Syrian, Lebanon Society, Illinois Sheriff’s Association, Itoo Society, AMVETS and American Legion Post #2. A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 1, 2008 at St. Sharbel Church with Chorbishop Faouzi Elia and Fr. Antoine Thomas officiating. Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday at St. Sharbel Church with recitation of the rosary at 5:45 p.m. Additional visitation will be one hour before the mass at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in West Peoria. Military rites will be accorded at the cemetery. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
