Obituary for Joseph R. Duncan

Peoria-Joseph Richard Duncan, 91, of Peoria died on June 25, 2021 at Independence Village. He was born on March 4, 1930 in Elizabeth, New Jersey to Guerdon and Laura Mack Duncan. He was united in marriage with Judith Anne Haines on March 4, 1960 in Elmwood, Illinois.
Joe was preceded in death by the love of his life, Judy. Joe and Judy celebrated 46 years of happily married life.
He is survived by three daughters, Pamela (Sean) Scranton of Dunlap, IL, Valerie (Nicholas) Steinbach of Newton, Iowa, and Rebecca Duncan of Downs, IL; eight grandchildren, Lauren (Jeff) Hanson, Nicholas (Lynsey) Steinbach, Joseph (his namesake) Scranton, Emilee (Dustin) Brisel, Alexander Scranton, Keith Steinbach, Chace Steinbach, and Sadie Steinbach. He was blessed with two great grandchildren, Mae and Samuel. He is also survived by his brother Marvin and sister Pat of Florida, as well as cherished nieces and nephews. He loved well and was well loved.
After high school, Joe served his country in the US Air Force where he was a Staff Sergeant from 1950-1954. He graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1959 as a mining engineer. Joe had a successful career as a licensed professional engineer and retired in 1997 from the Peoria Sanitary District as Director of Engineering.
In retirement Joe loved woodworking, making clocks for his family and painting. He loved singing with the Peoria Barbershop Chorus and the United Presbyterian Church choir where he was a member.
Joe was cherished by his children and grandchildren who will greatly miss his “Papa stories” that will live on forever.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, July 1, 2021 at United Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Debra Avery officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded. A private burial of ashes will take place in Elmwood Township Cemetery.
