Obituary for Joseph Paul Tomich

Joseph Paul Tomich died in Henry, IL at 7:55 AM, March 4, 2017, age 99 years, after a debilitating bout of Influenza A.

Born December 16, 1917, Dumfermline, IL, to Tony and Mary (Marinich) Tomich, he was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, John, Matthew, Emil and George Tomich. Joe married Anne Agnes Gust on Oct 17, 1942, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Canton, IL and remained married until Anne’s death, Dec. 7, 2014.

Survived by his son, Thomas Paul Tomich of Cayuga, IN, daughter Theresa Tomich of Lakewood, CO, grandchildren, Lucy Metzroth of Arvada, CO, Theodore Metzroth of Longmont, CO, and Andrew Metzroth (Amy Cole) of Louisville CO, and a great-granddaughter, Lavender Coleroth of Louisville, CO. Also survived by his sister, Jean Gillmore of Reno, NV along with a niece and six nephews.

Joe graduated from Canton High School, class of 1937, where he lettered in track and played basketball. After forty years of factory work at Caterpillar in East Peoria, Joe retired as a plate inspector. He belonged to Croatian Lodge 201, Knights of Columbus-Gryzbowski Council 780, St. Monica’s Catholic Church and UAW Local 974.

Most of all, Joe was a hard worker determined to provide for his family. Amazingly, Joe overcame early family trauma and difficulties of the Great Depression. He worked second shift at his CAT job and spent his days in his vegetable garden and apple orchard, which produced abundant crops. There was nothing around the house or the garage that he could not fix! With Anne, his wife of 72 years, he was a regular on the polka dancing circuit in Central Illinois. He also enjoyed golf, candy, the Lawrence Welk show and vanilla ice cream. As a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, Joe relished the 2016 World Series victory. He was most proud of his son’s service in the US Marine Corps, his Croatian heritage, his grandchildren and great-granddaughter.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at both Aging Care Management in Peoria and Country Comfort in Henry for dedicated and compassionate care.

A funeral mass will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at Resurrection Mausoleum Chapel in Peoria. Visitation will be one hour prior to Mass at the Chapel. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Heart of Illinois Down Syndrome Association, the Alzheimer’s Association, St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
