Obituary for Joseph P. Spears

HANNA CITY – Joseph P. Spears, 60, of Hanna City, passed away at 6:07 a.m., Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center. Joe was born on February 20, 1953, in Peoria to Joseph W. and Theresa I. (Fitzpatrick) Spears. He married Sue Kowalski on August 16, 1986 in Peoria. She survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Becky (David) Burke of Davenport and Devan Spears of Hanna City; one son, Joey Spears of Hanna City; one granddaughter, Kennedy Burke; six brothers, Jim Spears of Peoria, Bill (Deb) Spears of Peoria, Bob Spears of Princeville, Mike (Julie) Spears of Peoria, Pat (Cindy) Spears of Kickapoo, and Tom (Angie) Spears of Peoria; and 35 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister-in-law, Regina Spears. Joe was a patrolman for Peoria Police Department for over 35 years, retiring in 2012. After his retirement, he worked part-time at Sherwin-Williams and Green Finish Line Ford. He coached and taught at Owens Center Ice Rink for over 10 years, and was coordinator for the Peoria Mini-Mites Youth Hockey Program. Joe enjoyed watching the Chicago Blackhawks, woodworking, the outdoors, and riding his Harley. He also loved spending time with his family, especially his new granddaughter, Kennedy. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Kickapoo. “He was never seen without a smile on his face.” Funeral Mass will be at noon, Saturday, October 12, 2013, at St. Philomena Catholic Church. Father David Richardson and Fr. Joseph Dondanville will officiate. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m., Friday at St. Mary Parish Hall in Kickapoo. There will be no additional visitation prior to the Mass. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
