Obituary for John W. Kenning Sr.
Peoria-John W. Kenning, Sr. of Peoria, IL and Tucson, AZ passed peacefully with family present February 12, 2017 at Manor Care, Liberty Village, Peoria, IL at the age of 90.
He was born in Peoria, November 15, 1926 to the late Anthony L. and Emma M. (Upschulte) Kenning. John was married in Peoria November 23, 1950 to Rosalie C. Hitpas.
John is survived by Rosalie and their 3 sons John, Jr., Plano, TX, Philip, Jackson, MS, and Todd (wife, Cindy), St Louis, MO, and 7 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers and a sister.
John worked at Caterpillar, retiring in 1990 as Corporate Controller. During his 40 years at CAT he worked in Joliet, IL, Grenoble, France, Sao Paulo, Brazil, and several Peoria area facilities. He served in the US Maritime Service from November 1944 to 1947 as Chief Radio Operator, and in the US Army from 1951 to 1953.
A graduate of Spalding Institute, he graduated Cum Laude from St. Louis University in 1951 with BS in Accounting and Economics. In 1994, he was inducted into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame, as a team member of the 1944 unbeaten Greater Peoria Football champions. During his lifetime John was active in softball, tennis, golf, and bowling. John was a former member of Willow Knolls CC, Mt. Hawley CC, Knights of Columbus, Willow Knolls CC Men’s Golf League, and the National Association of Accountants.
Services will be held Saturday February 18, 2017 at St. Jude Catholic Church, visitation 9:30-11:30 am, Mass 11:30. Interment services with military honors will be held at Resurrection Mausoleum following the Mass.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Catholic Church, Peoria Notre Dame High School, or a charity of your choice.
