Obituary for John S. Vogel

John Sebastian Vogel, age 61, passed away at 9:29 pm Thursday, December 23, 2021 at UnityPoint Methodist Hospital, Peoria, IL, from pneumonia.  He was born December 9, 1960, in Peoria, IL.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Patricia Vogel of Peoria, IL; an older brother, Ronald Vogel of Peoria, IL; an older sister, Monica Vogel (William Dawson) of San Diego, CA; and his long-time girlfriend, Vickie Elston of Pekin, IL.
He is survived by two brothers, Mark Vogel (Barbara) of Denver, CO and Matthew (Rhonda) Vogel of Canton, IL; two sisters Sharon Staff (Thomas) of Lake Bluff, IL and Helen Kearney (Thomas) of Glen Ellyn, IL; and many extended family members and friends.

John became an altar server at the former St Cecilia's Catholic Church and served Mass there many times when his father participated in the services as a lector.  He graduated with top honors from Peoria's Special Education School, Robert A Jamieson School.  During his school years, he participated in Track and Swimming events of the Peoria Special Olympics program.  He worked for many years at the Peoria Community Workshop and was well respected by fellow workers and supervisors.  He was a prolific bowler for many years with the very competitive Community Workshop League and achieved a 200+ average.

He was an avid NASCAR & Sports fan and knew the statistics of many of the drivers and teams.  He particularly enjoyed WWE and WWF wrestling and went to these events at the Civic Center in Peoria.  He had a great memory of dates:  weddings, birthdates, funerals and family events. He especially enjoyed going out to dinner with family and relatives.  Even though John was very thin and never had an ounce of extra weight, he ate more than anyone would expect.  His favorites were spaghetti, hamburgers, chili and grilled cheese sandwiches. He enjoyed spending time with his girlfriend of 18 years, Vickie; their favorite place to eat was Avanti's Italian Restaurant.

He loved living in his apartment, driving his car, going to work every weekday and shopping at Walmart on Sundays.  His family made certain that John's end-of-life wishes were fulfilled, even if it was hard to accept.  John was a bone cancer survivor; he was stubborn, energetic, resilient, and witty.  He enjoyed his life and was content with what he had.  He cherished his family and will be missed dearly.

Arrangements are being handled by Wright and Salmon Mortuary, Peoria, IL.
John's ashes will be buried during a private ceremony at St. Mary's Cemetery, West Peoria, IL.
A Celebration of John's life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Community Workshop and Training Center (CWTC) - Peoria, IL.
