Obituary for John Patrick "Jack" McSherry

Peoria -- John Patrick (Jack) McSherry, 94, of Peoria passed away at 6:05 a.m. Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at Lutheran Hillside Village.

Jack was born on July 27, 1928, in Battle Creek, Michigan, to Charles T. and Myldred E. (Hogan) McSherry. He married Joan Mary Theisen on August 9, 1952, in Detroit. They were married for 62 years until Joan’s death on August 8, 2014.

Jack served as a Private First Class in the 82nd Airborne, United States Army, and was honorably discharged in 1948. As a recipient of education assistance through the G.I. Bill, he graduated from the University of Detroit with a B.S. in Accounting. He joined the Detroit offices of Price Waterhouse (now PwC) in 1951 as an auditor and was transferred to the Battle Creek office as a member of the tax department shortly thereafter. Then, in 1968, the company requested that he launch their new offices in Peoria. In recognition of his expertise, commitment, and dedication, he was admitted to the partnership in 1978. Jack was an active member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Illinois and Michigan Societies of CPAs, and the Estate Planning Council of Central Illinois. Jack retired from Price Waterhouse in 1989 to pursue his love of the outdoors. He and Joan purchased an RV and wintered in Arizona and spent time in the Great Smokey Mountains. They settled again in Peoria and designed and built a custom home in Germantown Hills where they lived for many years.

While a dedicated professional, Jack was happiest when he was of service to others. He volunteered his time and skills on numerous boards, committees, and commissions in the Peoria area for over 50 years, including: OSF Saint Francis Hospital Medical Center community advisory board as former chairman and member; Greater Peoria Airport Authority as commissioner and former chairman; Rotary Club of Peoria as former president; Creve Coeur Club of Peoria as former president; the Florence Crittenton Home (now Crittenton Centers) as former president; and, as a board member and committee chairman at the Country Club of Peoria.

More recently, Jack could be seen walking the halls of the Lutheran Home delivering packages and offering communion to the room-bound, and the solace of prayer to those in need. He was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Mary of Lourdes Catholic Church in Germantown Hills where he was a communion minister. He was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Spalding Council for 72 years. Jack was a generous supporter of the Women’s Care Center in Peoria and a longtime sponsor of Unbound, an organization founded by lay Catholics supporting the poor and marginalized across the globe.

Jack was an avid golfer and earned his private flying license at Kellogg Airport in Battle Creek, Michigan. He enjoyed many hours in the air with friends and family.

Jack was predeceased by a brother Charles T. Jr. (Jerry), and two sisters, Elizabeth, and Terese. He is survived by six children: Brian (Mary), Cindy, Kevin (Kimberley), Patrick (Kim), Janine, and Lisa. He was also a proud grandpa and great-grandpa to: Michael (Holly), Brandon, Nellie, Emma, Ryan (Courtney), Anne (Anthony), Kelly, Kyle, Cam, Ben (Ali), Nic, Tyler, and Adeline, as well as Ava, Aspen, Coulson, Thatcher, Jett, and one new great-grandbaby on the way.

May joy and peace surround you, Contentment latch your door, And happiness be with you now,

And bless you evermore. – Irish Blessing We love you, Dad.
