Obituary for John P. Carr

PEORIA John P. Carr, 87, of Peoria passed away at 11:08 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, 2015, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
John was born on Apr. 11, 1928, in Springfield, Ill., to the late John E. and Alice (Hallam) Carr. He married Karen Zinser on June 27, 1970 in Peoria. She survives.
He is also survived by one son, John Carr of Peoria; two daughters, Christine (Richard) Rubsam of Thomasville, N.C., and Patricia (Michael) Rathje of Mullica Hill, N.J.; two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Heather; one brother, Robert Carr of Manito, Ill.; and one sister, Teresa Lemkemann of Spring Bay.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Frances Kelly.
John served in the Air National Guard for 36 years. He was fire chief from 1966 to 1988. He attained the rank of senior master sergeant. During his service, he was on the ship in the Bikini Island where they tested the atom bomb.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #2 and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #20; and he volunteered for the American Red Cross.
A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 16, 2015, at St. Bernard Catholic Church. Father Alexander Millar will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Cremation rites will be accorded following the Mass and burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in West Peoria. Wright Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
