Obituary for John Madigan, Jr.

John T. Madigan Jr., 89, of Peoria passed away October 13, 2018 at 3:30 pm, surrounded by his loving family in his home, in Peoria, Illinois.

He was born December 29, 1928 to John Thomas and Helen Clara (Gibson) Madigan. John married Bonnie Marie Nussbaum on May 14, 1949 in Peoria Illinois.
Together, they raised 8 children.

John is survived by six children: Bernard (Pamela) Madigan of Bartonville, Christine (Sandy) Frazier of Gentry, Arkansas, Daniel Madigan of Farmington, Kim Pettit of Dunlap, Patrick (Kelly) Madigan of Peoria, and Mark Madigan of Dunlap; 17 GrandChildren; 19 Great-Grand Children; and one Great Great Grandson; sister Helen (Donald) Brown of Peoria; brother Richard Madigan of Peoria; three sister in laws, Dolores Daily of LaMoilles Il., Carol Winn, Gloria Sheron both of Peoria; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife Bonnie, son Stephen, son John missing since 2002, both parents, two sisters, Mary and Eileen, and brother Raymond Madigan.

John was a devout parishioner of St. Thomas Catholic Church and enjoyed singing in the choir for many years. He bowled at St Bonifice and enjoyed playing softball with his sons at the Peoria Stadium with the Peoria Park District league. He enjoyed playing pool at the Peoria Christian Center with the Tuesday Night League. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree St. Jude Council #4333. At a very young age he began work at Albers Feed Mill, lifting 100 lb bags of dog food. While working there he gained 60 lbs of muscle and joined the Spalding Boxing Program, where he finished undefeated, and achieved a golden glove. He was a successful insurance salesman for National Life Insurance. He started his construction career working at O. Frank Heinz Construction Company and then later as a laborer for the Laborer Local #165 where he was a foreman for C. Iber and Sons and Williams Brothers.

John enlisted in the Naval Reserves in 1948, and was honorably discharged in 1953.

Family vacations to Devil’s Lake at Wisconsin Dells Wisconsin, were a highlight in the children’s memories. Throughout his life, John was an avid Cubs fan. Loved it when they won the World Series in 2016, but admitted they weren’t going anywhere this year! He loved his family more than anything and was a true family man who loved making memories with his grand kids and extended family. John truly had a servant’s heart, displayed by his loving care of our mother in the last 14 years of her life. He had a strong work ethic, and will be remembered as a strong-willed Catholic Irish Man.

Visitation will be Thursday, October 18, 2018 from 10:30 AM until 12:30 PM at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:30 PM. Msgr. Jason Gray will officiate. Burial will follow at Resurrection Mausoleum. Luncheon at 2PM at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Peoria Heights.

Memorials may be made to St. Thomas Catholic Church or Unity Point Health-Hospice.

We leave you with this final thought from John’s long list of 1-liners:
“I’LL BE ALRIGHT”
