Obituary for John M. McGann

PEORIA-John M. “Jack” McGann, 86, of Phoenix, Arizona and formerly of Peoria, passed away on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at his home, 3608 Citrus Way. He was born on November 25, 1921 in Peoria, the oldest son of Michael J. and Beatrice Brophy McGann. He married Bertha Driscoll and later married Rita Burt. He is survived by his wife, Rita; his son, John M. McGann II of Elk Grove, CA; his stepson, Brad Burt of Phoenix, AZ; his brothers, Patrick J. (Marita) McGann of Peoria and James K. (Wanda) McGann of Winter Park, FL; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, James M. McGann, a sister, Mary Margaret Day, and a brother, Robert F. McGann. He attended St. Patrick’s Grade School and Spalding Institute High School, where he played sports a both schools. He served in the United States Army during World War II in Italy, Germany, Africa, New Guinea and the Philippines. He was awarded the Battlefield Commission, Purple Heart, several Oak Leaf Clusters and several medals and citations from the Department of the Army. He rose to the rank of Major. He also served in the Korean War. For many years, he served as assistant to the President of W.D. Manor Co., Inc., one of the largest mechanical contractors in Phoenix, Arizona. John was a member of St. Louis the King Catholic Church. Visitation and funeral services were performed by Rev. Joseph Bui, associate pastor of St. Louis the King Catholic Church at the chapel of the Chimes Mortuary in Glendale, Arizona. Burial with military honors was in Resthaven Cemetery in Glendale, Arizona on Saturday May 31, 2008. Tributes and condolences may be submitted to www.wrightandsalmon.com
