Obituary for John "Jack" C. Brady
PEORIA – John C. “Jack” “Sweetwater” Brady, 70, of Peoria passed away peacefully at 10:05 p.m. Sunday, May 22, 2016, at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home.
Jack was born on June 27, 1945, in Peoria to the late Frank and Hildegarde (Feehan) Brady. He married Mary Eileen Couri on Sept. 2, 1967, at St. Monica Catholic Church. She survives.
He is also survived by three children, Diane Brady of Mundelein, Ill., Jill (Lucas) Ford of Atlanta, Ga., and Mike (Alissa) Brady of Dunlap; eight grandchildren, Sam and Nick Borcia, Olivia and Ava Ford, and Max, Jack, Kaitlyn, and Lucas Brady.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Suzanne Fulton.
Jack graduated from Spalding High School in 1963. He met the love of his life, Mary Couri, at Marquette University and enjoyed the next 48 years with her. Jack received his law degree from the University of Illinois in 1970 and joined the law firm of Vonachen, Lawless, Trager, and Slevin, where he dedicated himself to a lifetime of helping others.
Jack served his community faithfully. He served in the National Guard and was a former board member and general counsel for the Heartland Community Health Clinic, a board member for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and a board member for the OSF Community Clinic. He was an officer and director of the Peoria County Bar Association, Peoria Rotary, and AMBUCS. He also was a board member of the Peoria Cursillo and served on the Cursillo Prison Ministry, Teens Encounter Christ, Pre-Cana and Marriage Encounter teams.
Jack loved spending time with his family, particularly his grandchildren. He faithfully attended their athletic games and school events and never missed out on joining them in a pickup game of baseball or basketball. He was also an avid golfer and in his lifetime accumulated 5 holes-in-one. He enjoyed providing free golf lessons to his children, grandchildren, son-in-law, and anyone else who would listen. It was a common scene to observe his “students” dragging their golf bags down the opposite side of the fairway to clear their thoughts of the unsolicited “free” advice.
Jack had a strong relationship with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He always put his relationship with the Lord first, setting an example for his family and friends. He was a devoted member of the Catholic Church.
Jack touched many people’s lives. He made his friends feel like brothers and sisters. The world was made better by Jack Brady.
A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at St. Sharbel Church. Father Tom Henseler will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 30, 2016, also at St. Sharbel Church. An additional visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heartland Community Health Clinic or Tee It Up for the Troops.
