Obituary for John Franklin Rice

PEORIA – John Franklin “Jack” Rice, Sr., 90, of Peoria, passed away at 5:35 p.m., Thursday, June 13, 2013, at the OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria. He was born on November 20, 1922, in Anderson, IN, the son of Lawrence and Daryle (Breedlove) Rice. He married Norrine Streit on January 26, 1946, in Aurora. She survives. Also surviving are one son, John F. (Patsy) Rice Jr. Of Bloomington; three daughters, Camille (Douglass) Baker of Wheaton, IL, Colleen (Steven) Caldwell of Peoria, and Michelle (Joe) Quinn of Peoria; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three sisters, Jane, Velna, and Dorothy; and two brothers, James and Thomas. His parents, four sisters, and two brothers preceded him in death. John was a World War II veteran, serving as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. He piloted the C47 aircraft in both the European and Asiatic theatres of war, flying the China, Burma, India Hump. He recently had the privilege of taking the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight to Washington D.C. as a celebrated veteran and officer. He graduated with a degree in accounting from Aurora University, and later attended Loyola University. John retired in 1999 after a career with the Secretary of State of Illinois office. Prior to that, he was marketing director for Encyclopedia Britannica in Chicago. He was a member of St. Philomena Catholic Church for 42 years, Timberlake Club, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks for over 60 years last at Lodge #20 in Peoria. He also served on the board of several area business management associations. John enjoyed relaxing at his cottage on the Illinois River, traveling, camping, swimming, and most of all, time spent with his family and friends. He was married for 67 years to the love of his life, Norrine. He was a passionate, dedicated, and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at St. Philomena Catholic Church. Rev. David Richardson and Rev. John Verrier will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Monday, June 17, 2013, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Philomena Catholic Church or OSF Richard L.
