Obituary for John F. "Jack" Schlicksup
John F. “Jack” Schlicksup, age 91, of Peoria, passed away the morning of Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
Jack was born on May 17, 1931, in Peoria Heights, a son of Harold F. and Gertrude (Degnen) Schlicksup. He married Barbara Patterson on February 9, 1991, in Peoria. She preceded him in death on October 29, 2020. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, three brothers, and by his son, John Francis, Jr.
He is survived by his sister, Rosemary Bayless; his former wife, Virginia (Ginny) Schlicksup, and their children, Regina Johnson of Champaign, IL; Hal (Sharon) Schlicksup of Dunlap, IL; Sue (Bob) Schearer of Tuscon, AZ; Dan Schlicksup of Dunlap, IL; Cathy (Rob) Stevenson of Peoria Heights, IL; Andy (Amy) Schlicksup of Peoria Heights, IL; and Tessie (Tom) Bucklar of Peoria Heights, IL; his fifteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Also survived by Barbara’s children, Greg (Laura) Kimberley of Kinard, FL and Diane (Carl) Gomez of Peoria, IL; and grandchild.
Jack proudly served his country in the US Army as a 1st Lieutenant in the medical corps during the Korean War. He was a graduate of Spalding Institute and earned his Bachelor’s degree from Purdue University, College of Pharmacy in West Lafayette, IN.
Jack was co-owner and operator of the Schlicksup Drug Co., Scrip Inc. (chiropractic supplies) and MMG Leasing. He was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, St. Jude Catholic Church, the Riverplex and the YMCA. He was a proud leader of Boy Scouts for 23 years and a dedicated volunteer for Big Brother/Big Sister (he treasured his time with Darius who he mentored for 15+ years and are friends to this day), Score Mentors of Peoria and PAWS of Peoria. He was the founder of the Peoria Senior Softball League. He was a member of the Willow Knolls Golf League and member of the Board of Managers of Trail’s Edge Condos. Throughout his life he coached various grade school girls’ and boys’ teams in soccer, football and basketball.
Jack was fierce—fiercely competitive and fiercely social. He loved outdoor adventures, a good laugh and learning something new. He valued being with friends and creating opportunities where they could be together. He valued being with his children – family time mattered. As a younger dad, whether it was loading eight kids into a station wagon every year to drive 20 or more hours to camp in the Florida Keys, or finding a way to get a family of 10 to afford crisscrossing Europe in a couple of trailers, he prioritized family adventures. In fact, he organized decades of boundary water trips which helped inspire scouts including his four sons and multiple grandsons to eventually become Eagle Scouts. He was proud of all his children and supported their lives and decisions. And that spirit continued with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Grandpa Jack was present in their lives willing to be wherever they wanted him to be.
The family would like to express sincere appreciation for the comprehensive care provided by Buehler Home. And a thank you to OSF for care and honoring his wishes.
Visitation will be Friday, July 15, 2022 from 2:00pm – 4:00pm at St. Philomena’s Church. Funeral Mass immediately following at 4:00pm, with Fr. David Richardson officiating. Cremation Rites will be accorded after Mass.
Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Peoria Chapter, 614 W Glen Ave Peoria, IL 61614.
