PEORIA ~ John E. Slater, 80, of Peoria, passed away at 11:20 p.m. Friday, August 26, 2022 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria.
He was born March 12, 1942 in Peoria to George L. and Irene S. (Weger) Slater.
He graduated from Longfellow Grade School and was a 1960 graduate of Woodruff High School. He attended several college classes and was a 2000 graduate from Community Leadership School.
He retired from Peoria Public Board of Education after 28 years of public service. He also worked at the Southside Miracle Mart as the Assistant Manager.
John loved helping his neighbors, most of his life living on the Northside and Averyville neighborhoods. He like to say “Let’s have a few laughs and get the job done!”
He was a past member of Peoria #15 Masonic Lodge Scottish Rite, where he served on the stage crew and Mohammed Temple as fire patrol secretary, and was a lifetime member of Amvets Post #64. He was Greater Peoria President of the Illinois Municipal League of Employees and also served as State Board Director.
John is survived by his special friend, Little John.
John was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Shirley Hibbard; and two brothers.
Private graveside service will be held at Parkview Cemetery in Peoria, IL.
