Obituary for John Bozsoki
FARMINGTON – John Smith, 89, of Farmington passed away at 7:56 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016, at UnityPoint Health – Proctor.
John was born on Nov. 23, 1926, in Pekin to the late Alexander and Marguerite (Toth) Bozsoki. He married the love of his life, Patricia Grimm, on Nov. 3, 1951. She survives.
He is also survived by his children, Mark (Chris) Bozsoki of Mesa, Ariz., Mike (Dina) Bozsoki of Lebanon, Tenn., John (Debbie) Bozsoki of Farmington, and Peggy (Dave) Rose of Farmington; 15 grandchildren, Brian (Julie) Bozsoki, Amy (Jacob Booze) Bozsoki, Jason (Sara) Reed, Niki (Rose) (Craig) Overcash, Justin (Jessica) Rose, Kevin Reed, Eric Rose, Kristin Reed, Emily (Bozsoki) (Derek) Williams, Heidi (Rose) (Mike) Walter, Anne Rose, Joey Rose, Mary Rose, Bree Bozsoki, Matt Rose; and 11 great-grandchildren, Micah Reed, Lydia Overcash, Zaiah Reed, Jonah Reed, Jackson Booze, West Bozsoki, Addyson Overcash, Brooklyn Booze, Quintin Rose, Ezrah Reed, Sadie Rose.
John was a World War II US Navy veteran serving from 1944 to 1946 on the USS Turandot. He was a firefighter with the Peoria Fire Department for 37 years, retiring as battalion chief.
He was a member of the Retired Fire Chief’s Association and played a big part in the establishment of the Peoria Fire Department Credit Union, where he continued to work years after his retirement as the treasurer. He was also a member of the Farmington Police Commission Selection Committee and St. Matthew Catholic Church in Farmington. He was a lay member of the Franciscan Third Order of Nuns. He attended many religious locations such as Medjugorje and Fatima.
John was a very caring and loving husband, father, and grandfather and took pleasure in giving. His wife, children, and grandchildren always came ahead of everything else in life. He welcomed each addition to the family. Over the last several years, he was totally devoted to the care of Pat.
After retirement, he and his family spent many winters on the beaches of Gulf Shores, Ala.
John enjoyed fishing, golfing, and camping.
A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 2016, at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Farmington. Father Paul Stiene IC will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the church. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Resurrection Cemetery with military and firefighter honors. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
