Obituary for John A. Mattern
PEORIA-John “Red” Albert Mattern, 87, of Peoria, passed away at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving family. John was born on January 16, 1922 in Melbourne, FL to Albert and Anna Mae Lenton Mattern. He married his high school sweetheart, Helen Marie Peterson on October 16, 1942 in Burlington, IA. Helen, our beloved mother, passed away on July 15, 2002 in Peoria. Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie (Jim) Landrus and Nancy (Larry) Potter; one son, John (Marsha) Mattern all of Peoria; eleven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. John worked at WABCO-Komatsu for 44 years, and was a Real Estate Agent for Century 21 Realtors for 25 years. John loved America and was a proud U.S. Army veteran, serving his country during WW II. John fought with the 101st Division at the Battle of the Bulge, the largest land battle involving the American Army ever. John was wounded in this great battle and received a Purple Heart and Bronze Star for bravery. He loved to fish, watch Nascar races, and have fun with family and friends, and tell jokes. Family was always his top priority and he will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. John was a member of Our Saviors Chapel in Peoria. Funeral Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at Wright & Salmon Mortuary with Rev. Ken Yocum officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the services. John will be laid to rest at Swan Lake Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Midwest Affiliate.
