Obituary for Jim S. Stokowski
PEORIA-Jim S. Stokowski, 90, of Delavan and formerly of Peoria, passed away at 3:15 a.m. on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, in Delavan. He was born on August 7, 1920, in Minonk, IL, to Stephen and Irene McGrail Stokowski. He married Catherine “Kitty” Thill on April 24, 1954, in Peoria. She passed away on January 16, 1991 in West Palm Beach, Florida. He is survived by one daughter, Kimberly (Jeff) Hoyland of Delavan; three grandchildren, Zack, Austin and Shelby; several very special nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law, Clara (Hal) Mathes of Tremont and Virginia Stokowski of Peoria; and one brother-in-law, William (Monica) Thill of Germantown Hills. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Joe. Jim was a firefighter for the Peoria Fire Department for 32 years, retiring in 1977, as Assistant Chief. He also served as a Bailiff in West Palm County for 11 years. He was a World War II Coast Guard veteran. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Delavan, a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Spalding Council #427, Third Degree and Knights of Columbus, Spalding Assembly, #206, Fourth Degree, Alhambra and Elks. Jim’s passions were his family, University of Notre Dame, White Sox, playing cards, friends, and most of all his deep love for his grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at St. Thomas Church in Peoria Heights with Msgr. William Watson officiating. Visitation will be from 9-10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery where military rites will be accorded. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
