Obituary for Jerry Wayne Schmitt
Peoria- Jerry Wayne Schmitt, age 67, passed away at 8:00 on Friday, April 8, 2022 at his home with his family by his side.
Born June 3, 1954 in Peoria, a son to Ulrich and Lucille Doris (Schmidt) Schmitt. He attended both ICC and Bradley University before obtaining his banking certificate and worked for various banks for 35 years. On October 9, 1982 he married Martha Crusen at St. Bernard and together they cherished 39 years. Jerry was happiest when he was coaching kids’ sports. He was a dedicated ST. Jude Memphis to Peoria Runner. Jerry loved Notre Dame Football, the St. Louis Cardinals, and Chicago Bears. He always looked forward to the trips to Door County, Wisconsin with his family, and most importantly he was a beloved husband, father and brother and was deeply loved and will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his wife Martha of Peoria; two sons: Peter and Tim Schmitt both of Peoria; two sisters: Jeanette German of Morton and Janice (Aaron) Miller of East Peoria, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: James and John Schmitt, one sister Joann Schmitt; one brother-in-law Gordon German; in laws Jim (Kay) Crusen; John Crusen and Brother-In Law Gary (Mary Sue) Crusen Vachon.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 11, 2022 between the hours of 4:00pm to 7:00 PM at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 12, 2022 at 10:00 AM at St. Philomena Catholic Church with an additional visitation one hour prior to mass. Father David Richardson will officiate, and burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff of OSF Hospice, especially Julia who provided their family with love and support. The family would also like to thank their extended family, friends and neighbors who supported them through the years of this devastating illness. Their support gave them the courage and strength to face the challenges of the disease. Words will never be able to express their heartfelt gratitude for all the kindness and compassion shown to the family over the years.
In lieu of flowers memorials in Jerry’s memory may be made to Sophia’s Kitchen, St. Jude Children Hospital in Memphis or a charity of the donor’s choosing.
