Peoria- Jeanette Mary ”Jan” Slyman, age 86, passed away Friday, April 20, 2018 at Unity Point Proctor in Peoria.

Jan was born on January 17, 1932 in Peoria to Edward and Mary (Joseph) Slyman in their family home on Saratoga St. across the street from St. Patrick’s Rectory, weighing in at 11 pounds 10 ounces.

Jan was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Robert Slyman, who both died young, Bobby, 21 and John, 34; Two half brothers, Ralph and Sarkis Slyman. Sarkis drowned in Meramac River in St. Louis at age 21; one half sister, Sarah (Slyman) Steinmetz and her parents.

In 1947, Jan worked at Proctor Recreation Center for Neve Harms where they introduced tetherball for teen recreation. In 1948, she worked at Proctor Hospital on 2nd St and also worked nights at Maple City Stamping Co. in the north end of Peoria assembling bunk beds for the US Army.

In 1949, she worked for the Peoria Park Board overseeing teen dances and recreation at different grade schools each evening and as a second job she ran the elevator in the Lehman Building.

In 1951, Jan worked at Thompson’s Restaurant, across from the courthouse on Main St. She walked from Manual High School to Thompson’s and back home at 10 PM every night. In 1951, she lived with her aunt in St. Louis for 8 months. While there she worked for Skinner and Kennedy in the office during the day and at night worked on the excursion boat, the SS Admiral. She also worked at Knapp Monarch Co. in St. Louis and then ran Greyhound Buses through machine washes at night.

In 1952, she worked at Guardian Angel Orphanage in Peoria as a youth counselor and helped care for all the children under the direction of Sr. Regina. In 1956, she worked for Ralph Banner Photography.

In 1959, Jan worked at the Peoria County Courthouse as a juvenile Probation Officer. She always said, “I could write a book on my many encounters.” She conducted all the adoption investigations which came through the Peoria County Courts. Judge Harold Vonachon hired her. She later worked for Judge Charles Iben- “The best boss I ever had.” Glen Errion was her Chief Probation Officer at the time. In the summer of 1965, Judge Iben sent her to the University of Minnesota to attend JOI-Juvenile Officers Institute for one summer. She attended classes with judges, lawyers, police officers, and probation officers from all over the United States and the Virgin Islands. While in the Probation Office, she worked at night at Arlans, watching for shoplifters.

As a Probation Officer, Jan was privileged to attend the Governor’s conference on youth in Chicago, with her boss Mabel Murphy. It was hosted by Governor Otto Kerner. She also attended drug rehab and drug abuse prevention for teens in Springfield, IL. After leaving the probation office, Ray Trusch, Peoria County Sherriff, asked Jan to work for him, and she did for a short time.

Jan moved back to Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she worked at Dayton’s Dept. Store and Sears at night watching for shoplifters. During the day, she worked at St. Paul Fire and Marine Inc. Co., in the office. After 7 months of cold winters, she moved back to Peoria and got a job at Krause Dental Lab as a lab technician in training. While there, Caterpillar called and informed her that she was accepted for employment. She started work there in 1966 in Building TT in the Engineering Office. In 1973, Chief Joe Bush in Plant Protection asked if she would like to work in security. She was the first woman security guard at Cat. She worked in security as a guard and fire inspector for 19 years, retiring on August 1, 1992, with 26 years at the company. After retirement, she worked a short time at Red Lobster as a hostess, and at Neighborhood House helping with the children. She finally got tired of working and began volunteering at St. Philomena Church in 1994 planting flowers and watering the grounds. She did that every day for 4 years. Msgr. Rohlfs was her boss and she would always remember his kindness to her.

In December of 2014, she was diagnosed with lung cancer. After completing chemo and radiation every day for 3 months, she was cancer free. Thank God! She thanked Dr. Lal and Dr. Gerstner her oncologist every day and thanked Dr. Dawalibi, her family doctor, who detected the cancer and got her started on treatments immediately. Jan would be sure to thank her physicians and nursing staff at Unity Point Proctor for their care and kindness during her final days.

Funeral mass will be Wednesday April 25, 2018 at 10:00 AM at St. Philomena Catholic Church. Visitation will be one hour prior the mass at the church. Entombment will follow in Resurrection Mausoleum. Fr. David Richardson will officiate.
