Obituary for Jean Margaret Murphy

EAST PEORIA - Jean Margaret Johnson Murphy, 92, of East Peoria passed away at 9:45 a.m. Monday, Aug. 8, 2016, at Cornerstone Rehabilitation and Health Center.

Jean was born on July 23, 1924, to the late Harry and Violet (Stephenson) Johnson. She married John Patrick Murphy II of Chicago, Ill., on May 31, 1947, in Kewanee, Ill.

Jean attended Western Illinois University, where she met and married the love of her life, John Murphy -they were the rock and heart of their family. She went on to teach second grade in the Rushville area. She later tutored children in East Peoria grade schools and was active in her children's mothers clubs. She adored being a homemaker and held dear her Swedish ancestry amid the many Irish influences in her life, which she also enjoyed.

She was a loyal Republican and a devout Catholic.

Jean and John were founding members of the longest running potluck group, who gathered monthly for decades. She was an avid Cubs fan all her life, rarely missing a game on the radio, and often quoting league stats quite accurately...Go Cubs Go! In her 80's and 90's, instead of Happy Birthday, we sang “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” She treasured the family summer vacation on Lake Chetek. Jean and John will be remembered every summer for years to come at the lake.

She loved gardening and was a member of the Peoria Garden Club, St. Monica's Ladies Guild, and Fondulac Women's 9-Hole Golf League. She served proudly on the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary Board, often modeling with her Swedish grace and beauty.

She is reunited in heaven with John. She prayed daily for her family and they will continue to do the same for her.

Jean is preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Patrick II; her four sisters, Harriet, Lorayne, Mynette Mary Jane and Joan; her brother, Donald; and son-in-law, George Hallstein.

Jean is survived by one sister, Janet (Dean) Price of Neponset, Ill.; her daughters, Jane Melanie Hallstein of Eau Claire, Wisc., and Patricia Anne (Robert) Scott of Peoria; her son, John Patrick (Connie) Murphy III of Peoria; her grandchildren, Elizabeth (Nick) Roach of St. Louis Park, Minn., Steve Maher of Eau Claire, Wisc., Katherine "Katie" Murphy of Peoria, John Patrick "Jack" Murphy IV of Peoria, Robert "Bo" (Jen) Scott of Castle Pines, Colo., and Andrew (Kelly) Scott of Peoria; her six great-grandchildren, Robert, Jacob, Madison, Michael, Emma and baby brother due any day; and several nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2016, at Resurrection Mausoleum and Cemetery in Peoria. Father Marchulones will officiate. Visitation will be one half hour before the Mass. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum. Wright & Salmon is handling the arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Salvation Army or the American Diabetes Association.
