Obituary for James T. McCabe

PEORIA – James T. McCabe, 85, of Peoria passed away at 12:00 a.m. Sunday, July 6, 2014, at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home. Jim was born on June 19, 1929, in Chicago to Francis and Beatrice (Reilly) McCabe. He married Teresa Aid on September 6, 1952, in Burlington, Iowa. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, James F. (Joyce) McCabe of Hilton Head Island, S.C., and Michael E. (Ann) McCabe of North Canton, Ohio; seven grandchildren; one brother, Frank R. (Sue) McCabe of Edwards; and one sister, Mary McCabe of Springfield, Ill. He was preceded in death by one sister, Helen. Jim graduated from De LaSalle High School in Chicago. He later graduated with a bachelor degree in accounting from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, where he was named All-American in basketball and was inducted into their Hall of Fame. He was an Army veteran, serving in the Korean War. Jim had a long career in Latin America for Caterpillar, including president of Caterpillar Mexico. He ended his 37-year career in Peoria, as regional manager for Latin America. He later worked for Haggerty Bros., retiring in 1992. He was an active member of St. Thomas Catholic Church, involved in several areas of ministry especially as a leader of the Good Samaritan group in its ministry to the shut-ins. Another of his deep involvements was as a member of the Peoria Area Vocation Support Group, serving as president for a number of years. A funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2014, at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Msgr. William Watson will officiate. Visitation will be 5 -8 p.m., Thursday, July 10, 2014, at the church. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum at 2 p.m., Friday, July 11, 2014. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is handling the arrangements. Memorials may be made to Peoria Area Vocation Support Group or St. Thomas Building Fund. Tributes and condolences may be submitted to
