Obituary for James R. Gustafson
Peoria- James R. Gustafson, age 86, passed away at 3:18 AM, December 13, 2016 at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home in Peoria, IL.
Born November 7, 1930 in Burlington, IA a son of James H. and Marguerite A. Koch Gustafson. He married Joan Dixon, May 26, 1956 in Brownville, Maine. She survives, along with four children; Sandra (Dave) Brown of Brimfield, IL, Jim (Beth) Gustafson of Barrington, IL, Robert (Kimberly) Gustafson of Naperville, IL and Rick (Jenni) Gustafson of Peoria, IL, 15 grandchildren; Natalie, Stephen, Michael and Matthew Garayalde, Jenny(Dan) Stahl, Andy and Mary Brown, Madeline and Abigail Gustafson, Jack, Joe and Grace Gustafson, Ashton, Evangeline and Charlotte Gustafson, and 5 great-grandchildren.
James was preceded in death by his parents and two daughters; Kathleen Garayalde and Mary Elizabeth Gustafson.
James was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He retired as a manager from the East Peoria US Post Office after working 37 years. After that he worked for The American Red Cross. He was a parishioner and active member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church and School, coaching, singing in the choir and serving as a Eucharistic minister. James was a volunteer for 15 years at The Heart of Illinois Harvest, but he was the happiest being with his family. He loved spending times with his grandchildren and will be dearly missed.
The family would like to thank the staff at OSF Richard L. Owens Hospice Home for their loving care and compassion for James.
Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:30 PM, Thursday, December 15, 2016 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church with a recitation of the Rosary at 7:30 PM. Funeral Mass will be 11:00 AM, Friday, December 16, 2016 at the church with an hour prior visitation. Msgr. Brian Brownsey will officiate. Burial will follow at Swan Lake Memory Gardens in Peoria, IL.
