Obituary for James M. Butler

Washington, IL – James (Jim) Malcom Butler, 82 of Washington, IL, passed away on September 11, 2021, at Lutheran Hillside Village, in Peoria, IL. Jim was born on February 16, 1939 in Peoria, to Scantland and Phyllis (Johnston) Butler.

He married Tanya Scheerer (the mother of his three children) in 1959. She preceded him in death on April 15, 1989. He married Judy Byrd in 1986. She survives. He later married Catherine Rees in 2016. She, preceded him in death on June 11, 2021. Jim was also preceded in death by his parents, son, Patrick Butler of Chicago, IL, brother, Greg Butler of Peoria, IL, sister, Jackie (Tom) Norwood of Spring, TX, and his buddy, Jack the wonder dog.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Brenda (Michael) Smith of Peoria, IL, son, Jay Butler (Chris Sinclair) of Eugene, OR, Step-son, Matt Byrd of Washington, IL, grandchildren, Erik and Tyler Smith of Peoria, IL, sister, Janice (Norm) Berry of Monument, CO, brother, Mike (Elsa) Butler of Pekin, IL, brother, Bob Butler of Peoria, IL., many cousins, nieces and nephews, and his beloved, chocolate lab, Desi.

Jim graduated from Spalding Institute in 1957. A mechanical engineering graduate of Bradley University, he earned a BSME in 1962, an MSME in 1969, and an MEA in 1974. His first job out of college was as a draftsman for Le Tourneau Westinghouse (later known as WABCO, Dresser, Komatsu Dresser, and Komastu). This was followed by various engineering positions, until Jim served as Chief Engineer of Electric Mechanical Trucks. In 1976, Jim became the Sales Manager of International Sales for Latin America and the Far East, including Australia and India. This afforded him the opportunity to travel all over South America and Asia. In 1986, under Dresser, he became Vice-President of Parts and Service, later becoming Vice-President of Sales & Service under Komatsu Dresser. He left Komatsu in 1995 and spent five years as a consultant with Unit Rig, a division of Terex. In 2000, Jim went to work as an agent for Met Life Insurance Co, until going to H&R Block and spending 11 years working as a tax preparer, retiring after the 2013 tax season.

Throughout his life, Jim played many sports, including basketball, football, golf, and tennis. He loved and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and always looked forward to meeting his high school friends at the Lariat Steakhouse for their monthly lunch. He also, found pleasure in his time spent as a member of the Mid-Illinois Corvette Club.

A Funeral Mass will be on Friday, September 17, 2021 at 12:00 pm, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, in Peoria, IL, with a visitation one hour prior to the Mass, beginning at 11:00 am. Father Thomas Taylor will officiate, and burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, in Peoria, IL.

The family would like to thank the staff at Lutheran Hillside Village, UnityPoint Health Methodist 6 Crescent, and his caregivers with OSF Healthcare Hospice for their loving care.

Memorial donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Endowment Fund, the American Heart Association, or St. Jude Midwest Affiliate.
