Obituary for James "Jim" Maher

PEORIA - James J. “Jim” Maher, 85, of Peoria died at 4:53 a.m., Thursday, March 21, 2013, at Heartland Manor Care. Jim was born June 4, 1927, in Vail, IA, to Clarence and Gertrude (Downey) Maher. He married Mary G. “Jerry” Daley on June 22, 1957, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Omaha, NE. He is survived by his daughters, Sheila Maher and Monica Maher, both of Peoria; his son, Terry (Mary) Maher of Omaha; six grandchildren, Lauren Pollock of Portland, OR, Leigh Pollock of Chicago, and Kassie (Homer) Williams of Chillicothe, Steve Maher of Tampa, FL, Caroline Maher of Aurora, CO, and Joe Maher of St. Louis, MO; and his sister, Dorothy Hurley of Omaha, NE. Jim was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; his sisters, Madonna Ryan and Joanne Leland; his brothers, Ed and Gene; brothers-in-law Pat Ryan, George Leland and John Hurley; and sister-in-law, Kathleen Maher. He was a Korean War veteran who served in the US Army. Jim worked at Nutrena Feeds in Omaha and Peoria and retired from Jim Smith Nissan in Peoria. He was also a tax preparer for over 40 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Spalding Council #427, Third Degree. His greatest joy was his grandchildren and their accomplishments and his dogs, Buddy and Boris. He will be missed by all those whose lives he touched. Jim’s family would like to thank his home care provider, Brittany O’Pry, OSF Hospice, and the staff at Heartland Manor Care. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m., Monday, March 25, 2013, at St. Philomena Church, with the Rev. David Richardson officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary, with a Scripture Service at 6:45 p.m. Additional visitation will be 30 minutes before the Mass at the church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Children’s Hospital of Illinois, Tazewell Animal Protective Society (TAPS), Alzheimer’s Association or to the charity of the donor's choice.
