Obituary for James E. Whelan
LaSalle- James E. Whelan, age 85, of Lasalle, formerly Peoria, passed away at 2:29 AM on Saturday, February 04, 2017 at LaSalle Veterans Home.
Born August 30, 1931 in Peoria, he was a son to James Marks and Rutha Mae Higgins-Whelan. He was a graduate of Woodruff High School, and went on to honorably serve in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. In 1958 he married the love of his life Dalene Mohr in St. Bernard Catholic Church in Peoria. He worked as a production scheduler for Caterpillar for 45 years until his retirement. James was past president of TOBY Club. He was an avid bowler who loved playing cards and visiting with his friends. James enjoyed traveling with his family, cooking on the grill, and always found time to sip a good cup of coffee. He will be remembered as a loving and loyal husband, father and grandfather. James cherished the opportunity to take his wife to her favorite places. He was dearly loved and will be truly missed.
Survivors include his wife Dalene of Indianapolis, IN; two sons, Kevin Whelan of Seminole, FL and Timothy (Tere) Whelan of Dunlap; one daughter Maureen Whelan of Indianapolis, IN; six grandchildren, Mariah, Corinne, Daniel, Aimee, Kyle, and Caitlin; as well as, one great-granddaughter Alaina.
James was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter Kathleen Walters, and one brother Jerry Lee Whelan.
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 10, 2017 between the hours of 5:00 PM till 7:00 PM at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. Recitation of the rosary will be at 4:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 10:30 AM at St. Jude Catholic Church. Father Patrick Henehan will officiate and burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. An additional visitation will be held one hour prior to mass.
Memorials in James’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association or the Alzheimer’s Association.
