Obituary for James "Doc" E. Donlan

James "Doc" E. Donlan, age 86, passed away at 9:21 p.m. on Saturday, December 8, 2018, at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.

Jim was born on July 26, 1932, in Joliet, IL to Thomas and Mary (Schmitz) Donlan. He married Carol A. DeBoer on July 6, 1957, in Whitinsville, MA. She survives. Also surviving are eight children, Colleen (Doug) Andreasen of Peoria, James (Lynnette) Donlan of Westfield, IN, Maureen (John) Geisen of Maple Grove, MN, Kathleen Popovich of Burke, VA, Eileen (Rob) Rupel of Waukesha, WI, John Donlan of Peoria, Ann (Billy) Sheahan of Waukesha, WI, Joe (Sarah) Donlan of Wilmette, IL, 26 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and special family member Sean (Amy) Ortiz of Birmingham, MI. Also surviving are two brothers, Jack and Bob Donlan, of Peoria, sister-in-law Mary Donlan of Peoria, and sister-in-law Irene DeBoer of Brewster, MA.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, brother Thomas Donlan, sister-in-law Jean Donlan, and brother-in-law Fred DeBoer.

Jim graduated from Spalding Institute in 1950, attended Xavier University and graduated from University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry in 1957. He was a highly respected dentist in Peoria, retiring in 2012.

Throughout his dental career, he was an active member of the American Dental Association, Illinois State Dental Society and the Peoria District Dental Society, in which he was president from 1976-1977. He was president of the Illinois Academy of Dental Practice Administration. He had many active roles on the ISDS Clopper Philanthropic Foundation. He was elected as a fellow in The American College of Dentristry in 1989. He was team dentist for the Peoria Rivermen, Peoria Chiefs and the Bradley Athletic Department for many years.

His most notable passion in the dental profession was his involvement in Central Illinois Oral Facial Anomaly team and the pursuant care of children afflicted with cleft lip and palates. In addition to this, Jim specialized in the treatment of patients with oral cancer. He was widely known and respected for putting heart and soul into the care of these dental patients.
Jim was involved in Peoria youth hockey and youth baseball leagues. He coached and participated in all aspects of these organizations. He was an avid fan of Notre Dame football, the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Blues. He especially enjoyed hunting and fishing with his friends and family.

He enjoyed his family get togethers and numerous family vacations in Florida and Wisconsin. Jim was widely known as a selfless and generous person. Everywhere he went, people knew “Doc”.

Jim was a founding member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish.

The visitation will be held at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church on Thursday, December 13, 2018 from 4 p.m.-7 p.m., with an additional visitation at 11 a.m. Friday morning, December 14, 2018, followed by a funeral mass at Noon, also at the church. Fr. James Pallardy will officiate and the burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to OSF HealthCare Foundation, St. Vincent de Paul Church or Peoria Notre Dame Livingston Fund.
