Obituary for James C. Earl McClung

PEORIA – James C. Earl McClung, 26, of Peoria passed away at 1:48 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014, into the hands of the Lord at his favorite spot in Timberlake. He was born on May 23, 1988, in Peoria to James R. and Holly (Wheeler) McClung. He is survived by his father, James R. McClung; his sister, Morgan (Drew Benton) McClung; grandmothers, Carma McClung and Patricia Wheeler; his aunts, Sheila McClung and Kim (Jim) Clark; great-aunts, Vicki (Dwight) Edwards and Judy (Stephen) VanWinkle; and California cousin, Katy Karns. He is also survived by his two dogs, Drake (his black lab) and Gunner (his chocolate lab). He was preceded in death by his mother, Holly Wheeler; his grandfathers, James E. McClung and Gary C. Wheeler; his aunt, Michelle Karns, who made sure he got to see Disney World at a very young age; and his uncle, David Wheeler. James was a hunter and an avid fisherman, having been taught by his Grandpa Jim. He also was becoming an expert with the bow and arrow and had recently taken up golfing. He also enjoyed woodworking, making birdhouses and plaques as gifts for his family. He graduated from Manual High School in 2007, where he participated in wrestling, football and the swim team. He worked at FenceMasters as a lead fencer with his father. James had a big heart and a wry sense of humor and was loved by all who knew him. The family would like to extend a special thank you to his Timberlake family, Big Mike, the Closen family, the Benton family, and Grant Egan. A memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, 2014, at St. Mark Catholic Church. Father Geoffrey Horton will officiate. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014, at Wright & Salmon Mortuary. An additional visitation will be 30 minutes prior to the Mass at church. Cremation rites will be accorded following the visitation on Thursday. Because James would want everyone to be happy and comfortable, the family requests casual attire. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Peoria Humane Society. Last night while I was trying to sleep, my son’s voice I did hear. I opened my eyes and looked around, but he did not appear. He said, “Dad, you’ve got to listen, you’ve gotta understand; He didn’t take me from you, Dad, He only took my hand. When I called out in pain that night, the instant that I died, He reached down and took my hand, and pulled me to His side. He pulled me up and saved me from the misery and pain. My body was hurt so badly inside, I could never be the same. I love you all, and miss you so, and, I’ll always be nearby. My body’s gone forever, but, my spirit will never die! And, so you must all go on now. Don’t be sad, just understand…He didn’t take me from you, He only took my hand.” Tributes and condolences may be submitted to
