Obituary for James A. Bielenberg, Sr.

PEORIA-James A. Bielenberg, Sr., 80, of Peoria passed away at 1:15 p.m. on Sunday, January 27, 2008 at his home. He was born on April 25, 1927 in Elgin, IL to Robert and Rose Koch Bielenberg. He married Marilyn M. Smith at St. John’s Church in Clinton, IL on September 2, 1950. She survives. He is also survived by his four children, Jim (Debi) Bielenberg of Houston, TX, Rob (Jane) Bielenberg of Peoria, Dave Bielenberg of Peoria and Jan Bradley of Peoria; and his grandchildren, Jodie and Casey Bielenberg of Houston, TX, Katie and Doug Bielenberg of Metamora, Joe and Bridget Bielenberg of Peoria, Lisa Hackett of Peoria, Lori Williams of Shreveport, LA, Matt Bielenberg of Peoria and Jacki and Shannon Bradley of Peoria. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Bob and Doug, and one grandchild, Jamie Bielenberg Schliepsek. Jim was a US Navy veteran, serving during World War II on the Island of Saipan. He graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1950. While at Wesleyan, Jim played basketball on the team from 1947 to 1950 and was also a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. Jim was an insurance adjuster, starting in Quincy, IL and eventually becoming the Regional Manager of General Adjustment Bureau in Peoria. He left GAB to start his own independent adjusting firm in 1977, VanHoose, Bielenberg & Rettig, Inc. He retired from the insurance business in 1989. He was a long time member of the former Willow Knolls Country Club and enjoyed playing tennis and participating in their Tuesday afternoon golf league. Jim loved playing golf with his friends and very much enjoyed his two holes in one after age 70. He was a life long Chicago Cub & Bear fan and an avid Illinois and Bradley fan. He also greatly enjoyed following his kids and grandkids various endeavors. He was devoted to his family and will be truly missed by his wife, children and grandchildren. Private Family Memorial Services will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation. Cremation rites have been accorded. Wright & Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
