Obituary for Jack F. Ewend

Peoria – Jack F. Ewend passed away on Monday, April 19, 2021 at Independence Village of Peoria. Jack was 89 years old.

He was born in LaSalle, Illinois on Dec. 2, 1932 to Fred and Hazel Ewend. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Barbara Jean Johnson, nephew Jake Anthony and his long-time companion, Mary Vosberg. Kelly Needham, grandson to Mary Vosberg, also preceded him in death.

Jack is survived by his two children: Kimberly Hart and Jay Ewend both of Houston, Texas. Jack had eight grandchildren and nine great -grandchildren. He also considered Mary’s nine grandchildren as his loving own.

Jack was proud to have worked for the Peoria County Sheriff’s Department, retiring after 30 years of service. He made life-long friends and especially enjoyed working with Sheriff George Shadid.

In his retirement, he and Mary had a ball! Jack would decorate Mary’s garage into a spook house and used his creative touch, decorating her home for the holidays. They hosted countless neighborhood and friend parties. Jack was an extremely generous, gracious man. Every holiday was a big deal where Jack would provide excellent food and beverages and entertained Mary’s large family. They also enjoyed traveling to Houston and cheering on the Chicago Cubs and Bears.

He enjoyed central Illinois festivals like the Pumpkin Festival and Parade and the Irish Fest. He always insisted on paying for the restaurant bill, his heart was of gold. “Cadillac Jack” was always someone you could rely on and trust. He was a true gentleman and sensitive human being.

Jack was a graduate of Woodruff High School. He was a member of the National Guard.

The family would like to extend a warm thank you to Juliana Jordan and her staff at Independence Village. They also appreciate the kindness of the hospice staff.

No funeral or visitation is planned but a Celebration of Life will be held this summer. Donations can be made to the Kelly Needham Memorial Fund and St. Philomena School.

We miss you dearly Jack and love you and know you are happy to be in heaven with Mary.
