Obituary for J. Robert Dageforde

John Robert “Bob” Dageforde, a lifelong resident of Peoria and Peoria Heights, died at 6:40 am. on Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Lutheran Hillside Village, where he resided since October, 2017.

He was born October 29, 1923 to Carl W. T. and Emma Lenz Dageforde. He married Barbara Block Bradley in Peoria on December 4, 1954. She preceded him in death on August 22, 1983.

Bob is survived his children, Thomas A. “Tad” (Betty) Dageforde of St. Louis and Anne (David) Bartolo of Peoria, grandchildren Christiaan Dageforde (Rebecca Loeser) and Barbara E. A. “Bea” Dageforde, all of Chicago, and Emma C. and Gino T. Bartolo of Peoria. Additionally, he is survived by cousin Louise Dageforde, sister-in-law Anne B. Bodtke, and his nieces and nephews, Mac, (Pat), Tobe (Celeste), Meg (Sharon), Bill, and Milo (Elizabeth) Bradley, Tom Bodtke and Barbara B. Chapman.

Bob graduated Peoria High School in 1941 and attended Northwestern University, Dartmouth College and Columbia Midshipmen’s School before graduating from the University of Illinois following his service in the Navy during WWII. While in the Navy, Bob served aboard the U.S.S. Orca in the South Pacific and Philippines.

Upon his return from the war, he managed the family retail lumber business before returning to U of I to obtain his Architecture degree. Bob was a practicing architect for more than forty years and a principal in the architectural firm of Lankton Ziegele Terry & Associates. He was a draftsman at heart and gave up his drafting board only upon moving in late 2017.

He served on the Board of Children’s Home for 19 years and was a past member of the Tri-County Planning Commission, Peoria County Board of Supervisors, American Institute of Architects and his church vestry.

Bob’s life was defined by enduring friendships, many from childhood. He was generous in his kindness, a prolific writer of birthday poems and expert hider of Easter eggs.

Bob enjoyed family vacations in Wisconsin and Michigan and travelled extensively in Europe and China, where, as much as the sights, he enjoyed meeting people and learning the local culture and language. At age 70, he bicycled throughout Germany, a trip that culminated in attending a family reunion in his ancestral home. He loved jazz, painting, biking and skiing. His 80+ Ski Club pin was a prized possession.

Dad’s life was blessed, but not without its challenges, which he faced with grace and perseverance. He held dear his “AA Birthday” and nearly 30 years of sobriety. We thank his many friends in AA whose steadfast friendship enriched him.

A memorial celebration will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Peoria, on July 7, 2018, at 10 am.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Paul’s outreach team or any charity are welcomed.
