Hugo Carl Hoerdeman Jr., age 95, passed away on Saturday, December 31st, 2022.
He is survived by his four children, Jeff (Annette) Hoerdeman, Jenny (Dr. James) Kenny, Hugo Jr. (Darrelyn) Hoerdeman, and Margaret (Chris) Anderson. Also surviving, Hugo’s nineteen grandchildren and forty three great grandchildren. Hugo’s brother Joseph with his wife LaVonda, sister in law Barbara, and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews survive.
Preceeding Hugo in death was his beloved wife of 66 years, Doris, sisters Ann White, Caroline Coogan, Rosie Cremer Molloy, Gretchen Coogan and Emily Hoerdemann, and brothers, Leo and Harold.
Hugo was born the eldest son to Hugo and Caroline (Mueller) Hoerdemann on August 27, 1927. Gretchen, one year his senior and the eldest daughter, was Hugo’s guardian and protector during many of his coming of age adventures. Along with his siblings, he attended and graduated from St. Marks Catholic Church and Grade School. Hugo attended St. Bede Academy before leaving in 1945 to serve in the United States Navy. The USS Mansfield was his assignment for the following two years. A love for boxing earned him two golden gloves while serving in the Navy. After receiving news of his father’s death in 1947, Hugo was called home to care for family.
Doris Jean VanPelt, the love of his life, became his bride in November of 1953. That same year he launched his successful painting and decorating business. Many Peoria homeowners might say his decorating was a true gift and work of art. Hugo retired in 1991.
Along with the love of his strong Catholic faith, Hugo adored his wife, children, grand and great grandchildren. Family and friends played a huge part in his happiness. There is nothing he would not do for those he loved. If you were a friend of Hugo’s, that friendship was forever. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus from 1948, a member of the German/American Society and Rotary Club member. An avid volunteer at his Lutheran Hillside residence, calling bingo, bartending, advisor to 3rd floor and recycling were just a few of the activities he enjoyed.
Hugo and his perpetual positive attitude, ability to keep moving forward, quick wit, and smile will truly be missed.
Funeral Mass will be held at 12:30 PM on Friday, January 6, 2023 at St. Jude Catholic Church. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM until time of Mass, also at the Church. Fr. Patrick Henehan will officiate and burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Peoria, IL.
