Obituary for Howard Matthew Simpson

Peoria-Howard Matthew Simpson, age 99, passed away on February 9, 2018 in Peoria, IL.

Born April 29, 1918 in Peoria, IL, son of Laurens L. and Pearl C. (Howard) Simpson. He married Kathryn L. Jacquin on November 25, 1948 in Peoria. Howard was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, one son, James P. Simpson, one brother, Richard H. Simpson and one sister, Sarah S. Johnson of Peoria, IL.

Surviving are five children; John N. (Jayne) Simpson of Romeoville, IL., Cory S. (William) Christian of Baraboo, WI., Michael H. Simpson of Reedsburg, WI., David M. Simpson and Dana S. Lyddon, both of Peoria, IL.; ten grandchildren, Lisa Marie (William) Patterson, Ryan (Tess) Simpson, Kathleen (Timothy) Madigan, Ashley (James) Cahill, Mark (Nicole) Christian, Emily (Tony) España, Rebecca (Darrin) Sass, Luke Simpson, Blair Simpson, and Patrick Lyddon; two step-grandchildren, Dawn (Ryan) Marshall and Michelle (Thomas) Loftus; twelve great-grandchildren, Sean and Sophia Madigan, Blake, June, and Clara Patterson, Jack and Cole Simpson, Alex and Nicolas España, Brooke and Madelyn Sass, Abigail Cahill, five step great-grandchildren; Spencer and Brooke Marshall, Brittany (Kristofer) Krauth, Tommy and Ellie Kate Loftus; two nieces and two nephews.

Howard graduated from Peoria High School in 1936 and attended the University of Illinois in Urbana. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, a 4 year member of the Cavalry ROTC and a member of Scarab. He was a lifetime member of First Federated Church of Peoria. He was a charter member of Lakeview Museum and the former Willow Knolls Country Club. He was a volunteer at the Crow Canyon Archeological Center in Cortez, Colorado. He was a member of the Congregational Summer Assembly in Frankfort, Michigan.

He served our country in the U.S Army during World War II from 1941 until 1945 in the 1st and 2nd Armored Divisions in the African and Italian theaters and received the Purple Heart. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing Sudoku, fishing and volunteering for various charitable committees. Furthermore, he was a Chicago Cubs and an avid Bradley Braves fan.

He was a member of the W.D. Boyce Council, Boy Scouts of America for over 60 years, as a Boy Scout, Sea Scout, Assistant Scoutmaster, District Chairman, Executive Board and Vice-President of the Council, as well as member of the National Council and Central Region Finance Committee. He received the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America. He was a long time member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club and served as chairman for several committees for Kiwanis.

He worked for Bennett Publishing Company, serving as a Sales Manager, Vice-President and President from 1945 until he retired in 1983.

Howard will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He gave much service to his community and will be truly missed.

The visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 16, 2018 at Wright & Salmon Mortuary, 2416 N. North St. Peoria, IL 61604. The funeral will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at Resurrection Mausoleum Chapel, 7519 N. Allen Rd., Peoria, IL, 61614 with a half hour visitation prior. Rev. Dr. Forrest Krummel, Jr. will officiate. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Federated Church or the Boy Scouts of America.
