Obituary for Herman E. Becker

DUNLAP – Herman E. Becker, 88, of Dunlap, passed away at 8:06 p.m., Monday, December 24, 2012, at home surrounded by his family.
Herman was born November 20, 1924 in Doesburg, Holland, the son of Walter R. and Angelina Becker. He married Dorothy Kelly on March 30, 1946 in Albany, New York. They celebrated 66 years of marriage this past year.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a sister, Hedwig Mathewson of Kentucky; a son, Herman Jr. (Priscilla) of Tennessee; daughters, Nancy Perry of Peoria and Tracy (Robert) Miller of Dunlap; four grandchildren, Darren (Katie) Young and Nicole, Kelly, and Jeffrey Miller.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Walter Becker.
Herman retired in 1991 after 37 years with Weil-McLain Hot Water Heating Company in Michigan City, Indiana as General Sales Manager. During World War II, he served in the Pacific with the US Army Air Corp.
He enjoyed music and first sang in a church choir at 8 years of age. He also sang in Handel’s Messiah for 37 years at the First Presbyterian Church in Michigan City, Indiana. He was a member of Cathedral Church of St. Paul and sang in the choir there until three weeks before his passing.
Herman loved nature, fishing, exercising and painting. His most valued possession was his family. He left a lasting impression on everyone he met with his storytelling and integrity. He credits Toastmaster for helping him master the power of the spoken word.
Funeral Mass will be 2 p.m., Saturday, December 29, 2012 at Cathedral Church of St. Paul. The Very Reverend Robert A. Dedmon and the Reverend Canon James Clement will officiate. Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial of cremains will be in the church columbarium following the Mass. Family will greet friends at a reception following the burial. Wright Salmon Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Cathedral Church of St. Paul’s Music Fund or the Cancer Center of Illinois on Wood Sage Road, Peoria, IL.
